I have talked with my priest and I am a single man. I have SI swimsuit calendar for 2013. I talked to my priest about porn. And he said if your on the internet and it just pops up your not in sin. I replied in confession that I had it on my computer in this instance and was looking. He said it was mortal sin. I have solved the porn question right there. What about things like Maxim and SI? It can be confusing if one is lusting or admiring. He said not to have any temptations around but the thing is your going to have it. Is anyone of the opinion that magazines like Maxim are out along with the playboys?

For me those types of magazines are out. I find images like that take my imagination away out of my control. I might be different than you, but I have figured it out for myself - no men’s magazines for me.

I’d say out due to the intent behind the images in those magazines is to create or promote lust. Same with the calendar.

Get rid of them – trash them well so others do not get to them.

Anything you might actually enjoy is a sin.

The Church might as well demand women wear burquas. It seems like merely looking at a woman - clothed or otherwise - is a near occasion of sin.

It seems you really don’t understand your faith at all…

To the OP, those things are intended to instill a sense of lust and desire for the woman depicted, as such their basis is immoral.

It depends on the individual whether or not something instills a sense of lust. Maybe Maxim instills lust in some people. Me? I see the cover on a newsstand and think “Ho Hum, another half-dressed starlet I’ve never heard of.” It doesn’t get me excited at all. 🤷

Guess what - that means you can morally buy and read it.

It’s not a matter of if it does, it’s a matter of if it was intended to. I’m sure that there are some people who watch porn and think “ho-hum”. It doesn’t make porn any less immoral. Similarly, there are some people who are lustfully excited by even modestly dressed women. That person’s lust does not make the target’s apparel immoral.

It’s the intent that’s important, and the intent of those calendars is to instill lust. Whether it succeeds or not is unimportant.

Catechism:

2523 There is a modesty of the feelings as well as of the body. It protests, for example, against the voyeuristic explorations of the human body in certain advertisements, or against the solicitations of certain media that go too far in the exhibition of intimate things. Modesty inspires a way of life which makes it possible to resist the allurements of fashion and the pressures of prevailing ideologies.

2525 Christian purity requires a purification of the social climate. It requires of the communications media that their presentations show concern for respect and restraint. Purity of heart brings freedom from widespread eroticism and avoids entertainment inclined to voyeurism and illusion.

2522 Modesty protects the mystery of persons and their love. It encourages patience and moderation in loving relationships; it requires that the conditions for the definitive giving and commitment of man and woman to one another be fulfilled. Modesty is decency. It inspires one’s choice of clothing. It keeps silence or reserve where there is evident risk of unhealthy curiosity. It is discreet.

I certainly thank everyone for their (name removed by moderator)ut. It seems I have a consensus on a way to approach this. But one question is not getting answered and I’m not quite sure that the quote above from the cathesis is clear to me either. Is there an admiration of beauty? What is real beauty? It is all around to admire it is that to lust after it? The beauty of a woman for example physically and otherwise should be the same as the beauty of a sunrise or sunset shouldn’t it?

Bill

I don’t see how the appreciation of one’s natural biological counterpart can ever be the same as appreciating a sunset. This is part of the modesty thing. A properly dressed woman is easier to properly appreciate, as frustrating as that is for my libido.

Yes, there are legitimate forms of artistic depiction of feminine beauty, but S.I. and Maxim do not belong to that world. Maxim, particularly, is blatantly geared towards the sexual exploitation of women. Any magazine that runs an annual “Sexiest Women” issue makes its intentions quite clear.

Oh great! Can you give me an example or show me a page of feminine beauty that is not lustful?

That makes me feel icky. I know exactly what you mean and you’re not wrong, but that answer still makes me feel icky.

How about an artistic nude? I don’t just mean a painting either. Plenty of genuinely artistic photographs of the human form without clothing out there.

Maxim photographs are not meant to convey the beauty of the human form. They’re meant to inspire certain thoughts. If you don’t see that, you’re lying to yourself.

And to the point made by other posters, if you’re not incited into lust from those pictures or even pornographic pictures or videos that’s fine. But the media itself is still intrinsically evil because it’s meant to drive lust.

If, on the other hand, you’re lusting after a modestly dressed person or an artistic nude, the problem is with you.
