GIRM 308 & Crucifixes

According to all the references I can locate, the GIRM 308 states that a crucifix is required during the celebration of the Mass. However, in every copy of the GIRM I’ve been able to find online, 308 deals with the vestment colors, and has nothing about a crucifix being required. In fact, searching the documents for crucifix, or crucified, return negative results. I really need to find this reference, so that I can print it and provide it to my local parish (and I believe the diocese as a whole), as they are violating this rule.

Any ideas out there?

The Cross:** The cross with the image of Christ crucified is a reminder of Christ’s paschal mystery. It draws us into the mystery of suffering and makes tangible our belief that our suffering when united with the passion and death of Christ leads to redemption.113 There should be a crucifix "positioned either on the altar or near it, and . . . clearly visible to the people gathered there."114 Since a crucifix placed on the altar and large enough to be seen by the congregation might well obstruct the view of the action taking place on the altar, other alternatives may be more appropriate. The crucifix may be suspended over the altar or affixed to the sanctuary wall. A processional cross of sufficient size, placed in a stand visible to the people following the entrance procession is another option. If the processional cross is to be used for this purpose, the size and weight of the cross should not preclude its being carried in procession. If there is already a cross in the sanctuary, the processional cross is placed out of view of the congregation following the procession.115

Sure wish the cathedral in my diocese understood this. Until I complained on this board (and apparently quite a few people got upset enough to contact the cathedral) there wasn’t ANY cross or crucifix ANYWHERE in the church. No…not one, unless you went into the little side chapels. Someone didn’t think we needed to invite Jesus to mass, I guess.

So what do we have now? The pretty little mosaic processional cross is now in a permanent stand way back and off to the side of the altar. I keep reminding myself that we’re talking baby steps here, but at least it’s an improvement until we actually are blessed with a new bishop. Can’t wait to hear the uproar if he brings back kneeling and crucifixes.

Are you looking at the GIRM issued in 2002?
 
Jimmy Akin in one of his Q & A sessions explained this. He said that it is true that a crucifix must be present on the altar at Mass, the processional crucifix satisfies this requirement.
