I’ve been told different things on this matter:

The GIRM is only a guideline.
The GIRM is to be followed as is.

Which is it and is there something official from Rome stating this? (Also: Is “Amen” before receiving the Holy Eucharist at the NO mandatory?) Thanks.

As with many things, it is both. There are parts of the GIRM that are to be followed exactly, and there are places where it provides guidelines that each national conference of bishops may adapt.

And, yes, the “Amen” prior to receiving communion is mandatory.

Of course AMEN is required to be said before receiving Communion. I know priests who told me if someone does not say amen they ask the person if they are Catholic.

I’m surprised that question didn’t come to me. There was one time, several years ago, when I’d worked VERY late the night before and was not entirely awake at Mass. I believe I actually said “thank you” when presented with the Eucharist.

I think I did that once too.

Never mind, priests are just as imperfect. I’ve had priests who’ve skipped parts of the Eucharistic Prayer (thankfully in both cases realising after being met with blank stares and going back to say the parts they missed, and the validity wasn’t affected) and one who gave an announcement after communion and then just left without giving the final blessing at all!
