Give up the Bible, or the Catholic corpus?

I did read your response to Little Lady, that is why I said, sorry, because I agree with her. If you keep the Catholic documents, you will pretty much keep the Bible, because it is a Catholic document.

Okay, well, I’m sorry that I was sorry. lol. I guess I just thought it wasn’t so much that you agreed with her or not but you were actually not wanting the Bible to be considered a Catholic document.
 
Thanks for your explanation. See, I can easily imagine Martians landing. That just conceivably can happen. Extraterrestrial life has not been ruled out. Actually, that’s quite fun imagining the possibilities. How did God plan them into his plan? But, that’s a different thread.

OTOH, I would make a distinction an imaginary situation, and an impossible situation… akin to a square dodecahedron. I’ll leave you to your musings, though. Enjoy. 🙂

Personally I definitely consider the Bible a Catholic document. I just didn’t write that in the poll question because I thought that would start up a different discussion, especially with the non-Catholic Christians on CAF.

Agreed about the Martians! As for the square dodecahedron though, that’s not quite comparabable to a Church without either the Bible or Her other docs. The Church (or at least parts of the Church in certain places and certain times) has actually been without Her docs before – and She lived, of course. So the Church can at least temporarily be without scripture and others docs; a dodecahedron cannot temporarily be square.

I should think that the magisterial documents and writings of the Saints and Catholic theologians among them contain such a wealth of quotes from and analyses of different passages of scripture that you could practically if not actually reproduce the Bible from them.

I mistakenly left out the word “not” in my post and ended up saying exactly the opposite of what I intended to say. I hate it when that happens… I do consider the Bible, at least the New Testament, to be a Catholic document. So, I thought it best to delete my post entirely.

It’s a well-known phenomenon that voters participating in a poll or something similar (e.g. a referendum or an election) allow knowledge of the results so far to influence their decision. It’s a psychological thing; many people don’t want to be the lone voter or part of a small minority. Not that you can see who voted what on CAF, but still, but the voter himself/herself will still know “hey I’m the odd one out if I vote this way or that way”. So to get unbiased results based purely on the voter’s own opinion, polling works better when voters don’t know the results when they vote. That’s why polls allow this option to be used.

Anyway, you’ll see the results immediately after you vote, so the suspense won’t last long.

1st - this is a crazy question that is really just a “can of worms” question. However, I’m going to answer it anyway.

I would keep the Catholic docs and get rid of the Bible in your crazy scenario.

Reason: the world wide collection of Catholic documents sum up the Catholic Faith and includes commentaries on the Bible, explanations Biblical passages, etc. So we would be able to save a lot of the written Word in that situation.

But again, this question is terrible and simply will fuel people saying “oh, philsigke is saying we don’t need the Bible” which is NOT true.

So in reality, your question is flawed because it’s making us make a choice which will never exist in real life…

I voted to keep the Bible. Even if we lost ALL of the other Catholic documents, the Magesterium, the teaching body of the Church, doesn’t go away. So, we still not only have God’s Word in written form, but we also still keep the “pillar and bulwark of truth” (1Tim 3:15) which can still help us understand those things “difficult to understand and easily distorted to our destruction” (cf. 2Pet 3:16).
