I feel like I’m morally obligated to give credit to the singers of songs that I sing, play on an mp3 device or something, or make up a song based on a tune of an existing song.

Am I crazy? Or am I morally obligated to do this?

In what context? Are you recording CDs of yourself doing a bunch of cover songs?

No. Just the normal singing of songs while walking or doing something else.

I also feel like I have credit to someone when I tell something they said to someone else. Same with books (I think).

If I mention something to someone about what I’ve read, I’ll usually preface it something like, “I read this or that in so-and-so’s book … .”

If you are writing an academic paper or publishing a book, you need to quote your sources. But just walking around and talking … no.

In that case, you don’t have anything to worry about.

I think the whole crusade against piracy has made us hyper-sensitive to violating copyright. Not everything is a violation of copyright law.
