Brothers and Sisters,

Continuing St. Louis de Montfort’s “True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin”:
PART II: THE PERFECT DEVOTION TO OUR LADY

CHAPTER THREE - THE PERFECT CONSECRATION TO JESUS CHRIST

1. A complete consecration to Mary

  1. As all perfection consists in our being conformed, united and consecrated to Jesus it naturally follows that the most perfect of all devotions is that which conforms, unites, and consecrates us most completely to Jesus. Now of all God’s creatures Mary is the most conformed to Jesus. It therefore follows that, of all devotions, devotion to her makes for the most effective consecration and conformity to Him. The more one is consecrated to Mary, the more one is consecrated to Jesus.
That is why perfect consecration to Jesus is but a perfect and complete consecration of oneself to the Blessed Virgin, which is the devotion I teach; or in other words, it is the perfect renewal of the vows and promises of holy baptism.
  1. This devotion consists in giving oneself entirely to Mary in order to belong entirely to Jesus through her. It requires us to give:
(1) Our body with its senses and members;

(2) Our soul with its faculties;

(3) Our present material possessions and all we shall acquire in the future;

(4) Our interior and spiritual possessions, that is, our merits, virtues and good actions of the past, the present and the future.

In other words, we give her all that we possess both in our natural life and in our spiritual life as well as everything we shall acquire in the future in the order of nature, of grace, and of glory in heaven. This we do without any reservation, not even of a penny, a hair, or the smallest good deed. And we give for all eternity without claiming or expecting, in return for our offering and our service, any other reward than the honour of belonging to our Lord through Mary and in Mary, even though our Mother were not - as in fact she always is - the most generous and appreciative of all God’s creatures.
Come, Holy Spirit!

Dear Foamattress,

Thanks for your “heart” which lets us know you read and appreciated St. Louis de Montfort’s words. Have you read his little book on “True Devotion”? Have you perhaps consecrated yourself to Jesus through Mary? I hope so – if not, I hope you will pray about it. If you click on the Title of his book in this OP you can read the whole book online, or you can purchase it through Amazon – it is inexpensive in paperback editions. See HERE

It is also a useful addition to any Church’s Adoration Chapel bookshelf. 🙂

God Bless,

Thank you for posting this. I have started the 33 days morning glory which is a retreat within a retreat to consecrate myself to Mama Mary. She is a great comfort in my daily struggles and bit by bit is bringing me closer to Jesus

May we all give ourselves completely to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

St. Bonaventure:
I believed, therefore I have spoken: thy glory, O Lady, to the whole world.
Have compassion on my soul, and guide it: deign in thy good pleasure to take possession
of it.
Assign to it the testament of thy peace and thy love: give to it the memory of thy name.

Of the blessing of thy womb give me support: and from the fatness of thy grace sweeten
my soul. Break thou the bonds of my sins: and with thy virtues adorn the face of my soul.
Glory be to the Father, etc.

Thanks for your “Heart” and for this reply, Stephie, posting your great suggestion. I heartily agree: the book shelves in the Adoration Chapel of any Church would be a “perfect” place for adding a copy (or two) of St. Louis De Montfort’s small book, the treatise on True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin.. 🙂

Dear Atsirk,

Thanks for your reply. I also read the book “33 Days to Glory” and I know that it has helped people but I found it to be not as helpful for me as St. Louis De Montfort’s Treatise on “True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin”

I had read and re-read St. Louis de Montfort’s little book, and renewed my “Total Consecration” many times before someone gave me the book “33 Days to Glory”, so I was rather surprised when I realized the two books had “structured” the 33 days differently. Perhaps after you finish your 33 days using the book you have, you may want to read and compare it with St. Louis de Montfort’s book. May the Holy Spirit guide and strengthen you as you seek to come closer to Jesus through Mary, by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Dear patricius,

Thanks again for your “heart” and this reply. Sometimes such a brief quote from St. Bonaventure or any of the Saints, can leave us with questions and so we may need to go back to the full context of their writing. In his first sentence, St. Bonaventure says" “I believed, therefore I have spoken: thy glory, O Lady to the whole world.”

What did Bonaventure believe? It seems to me, he believed the Truth he heard in Scripture primarily, just as St. Louis and all our holy Saints testify. They listened to God’s Word and they believed the Truth they heard.

Once we have heard God’s Revelation in Scripture, Tradition and the Magisterium, and by God’s Grace believe the Truth God Is, and He gives to us, we are able to hear also what St. Bonaventure wrote and to do the Truth we hear:
I believed, therefore I have spoken: thy glory, O Lady, to the whole world.
St Louis de Montfort wrote his treatise on “True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin” so that the Church could hear also what God has said of the glory He has given to Mary, Mother of the Incarnate Word made Flesh, by the power of the Holy Spirit and the Mother His Incarnate Son gave to all of us dying on His Cross on Calvary.

Yes, patricius, God has entrusted us to His Mother, and she has all the Compassion He has given her for us. When we give ourselves to her she gives us such peace and love as our hearts can hold for all graces come through Mary as the Church teaches. She is both Mother and Model for us, as we seek to honor God through her and to grow in holiness.

Dear Torolf,

Thanks for your “heart” letting us know you appreciated the words of St. Louis De Montfort from his treatise on “True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin” What joy it gives me to re-read his words, quoted in the OP:

we give for all eternity without claiming or expecting, in return for our offering and our service, any other reward than the honour of belonging to our Lord through Mary and in Mary, even though our Mother were not - as in fact she always is - the most generous and appreciative of all God’s creatures.

Hopefully by God’s Grace, you will continue to read St. Louis de Montfort’s little book, prayerfully and slowly, for there is so much to hear deep within our hearts and minds. 🙂
