What’s more important, making reparations for a fairly large theft, or helping a family member buy things urgently needed for moving?

Thanks

Why don’t you give them back what you took and then help them move?

Definitely pay back what you stole first. Then you can offer assistance for a move after that.

assuming this is a hypothetical question from a hypothetical person facing this choice. If he has a sum of money in hand, and owes it to someone else, either because he has to repay theft, owes a debt or other reason, it is not his money, it belongs to the person he stole it from, ergo he has to repay that debt first. He has no right to make free with the charity using somebody else’s money. He should sacrifice his own money and belongings to help someone else in need. If you are holding something that belongs to another person, you have no right to give it away to a third party.

It suddenly dawned on me that you* do* have adjectives, Puzzleannie,or at least qualifications. The thought amused me, anyway. Sorry, I do have a wicked mind!

If it’s a serious question, fakename, should you ask your priest?

If you have stolen money, or someone has, the sin is against not only the person robbed, but also the family even though it didn’t seem they were affected at the time. When we sin, our sins may seem private but they are against the whole Mystical Body.
Restitution should be made, and part repentance is the sorrow of not being able to help the family at the present moment.

Stolen money doesn’t belong to you, so you can’t use it. Stolen money needs to be returned to the owner. The person then helps out family as best as they can with the resources they actually own.
