Anyone who has noticed how much I post here can tell what a distraction I let it become, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that I’m giving up CAF for Lent.

Is anyone else giving up CAF or some other kind of online presence for Lent?

What are your reasons?

Are you choosing something you are going to do in place of going online?

Yeah, I tried that “lessening” thing. We both know how well that worked for me! 🤣

I don’t know if I’m an addict, but I do a reasonable imitation…

Well, since I am giving up mindless scrolling (ie online without a stated purpose) on internet devices for lent, I expect I will be here significant less often.

Last year I gave up CAF for Lent. It was very fruitful. I hope your CAF fast is fruitful as well.

I have a little note on my computer that says “WHY am I here, again?” but I don’t notice it often enough.

The internet is so addicting. There are so many times when I sit down to look at something “real quick”, and before I know it an hour and a half has gone by and I’m running late for an appointment! (Like right now. :woman_facepalming:t5:)

I dont know about Lent but I do find myself wondering at times if CAF is any healthier for me than any other social media outlet. I guess it comes down to how I use it. Mostly, I use it as an addictive, time consuming distraction, no matter how fruitful it can actually be.

Starting Wed I will be posting in the prayer subforum only. With perhaps some posts to the other subforums on Sundays and feast days.

That’s what I ought to do when I want to go online. At least if I lose an hour in a book, I know what I’ve been doing when the hour is up.

I often give up CAF for Lent. I’m still undecided about this Lent. I feel like CAF is not the same sort of distraction for me that it once was. There are other things I need to give up more so than CAF.

I usually do this fast. It’s always been productive for myself and those around me. I will give up CAF. And then also social media surfing after 6pm (I have to do it for work).
Life is much more peaceful and well ordered without frequent self expression.
I don’t have to choose other activities, they are already there and it’s a matter of doing them with enjoyment and full focus.

I think many of us need to seriously consider the reality of addiction.
Blum and Hochshild wrote an awesome book:

There’s a difference between “addiction” and “either I talk to my friends online or I talk only to the cats for a solid week, except I might say hello to the convenience store clerk.”

And please don’t tell me to go make some new friends. If I wanted to do that right now, I would. I don’t want to. I do want to continue using the Interwebs to talk to friends I have already.

Well, the difference between you and me is how much time your duties get and how much time the cats would be getting their ears bent. I think there are many people who do use the internet appropriately. The problem is that I am not one of them. I don’t expect that CAF will turn into a ghost town just because I and people who are like I am have a hard time portioning time as we ought to do!

I have been perusing and participating more on the other sub forums and pretty much steering clear of the world news forum outside of liking posts.I am so much happier not getting caught up in the same old same old arguing back and forth.

I’ve thought of giving up CAF for Lent - most definitely. My problem is I’m not sure that’s doable for me nor prudent for private reasons. So I may cut back rather than cut-out. Or like someone else posted limiting my posting to the prayer threads or those asking for help in some way.

Rather than giving up wasting time online, I’m just giving more time to helping out at the church. We have a big church with a big fish fry tradition. It takes lots of volunteers. I have been a fish breader for the last couple of years and will do that again, but I’ll also be working at the lunches and dinners being served in the church’s activity center on Fridays. Time is something I have to give, so I want to give more of it.

CAF keeps me closer to the Catholic faith, so giving that up would not be a good idea for me.

My childhood nickname was bookworm.

Now I have read about 2 books in the past year.
