that will be great! I need to read more on this as I have started to have devotions for the Holy Souls in the last 7 months or so.
Thanks!
Ok, I am back from my meeting and I need to be quick because I have a ton to do although I would much rather talk about this subject because I find it fascinating because it puzzled me for so many years. I can’t seem to find my book on the internet at the moment but when I get home I will write down the name and the author and post it here. It is a very simple short, well written little book to give you the basics.
Jesus came to earth to FORGIVE SINS and to SUFFER FOR ORIGINAL SIN and in so doing he allowed us to crucify him on the cross and endure that pain.
What Jesus was teaching us is that in order to get to heaven we have two things we need to do. First we need to be forgiven of our sins and secondly we need to suffer to atone for those sins. Suffering is a cleansing of the stain of sin, it is like washing. We can not go before God / to heaven stained with sin, nor would we want to. We want to be clean of sin and worthy of heaven.
Do we understand why we need to suffer to be clean? This is a mystery that requires faith. Jesus showed us this is what needs to be done and we need to have faith. He would not mislead us.
When a soul is on earth with their human body going to church and confession on a regular basis they are likely forgiven for all their sins. However they may have lived a perfect Beaver Cleaver life and never suffered. As a result, upon their death, they are still stained with sin. Those souls still stained with sin go to purgatory to be cleansed of all stain and as a result they suffer.
We need to keep in mind that one of the privileges of being here on earth is that we are allowed to pray for ourselves and ask others to pray for us, and also to suffer. When we die we no longer can ask for prayers and we simply need to suffer until we have atoned for all our sins which could be for thousands of years. The only way of getting out of purgatory sooner is through prayer from those still on earth or those in heaven (saints) and help suffering.
Because so many souls have been forgotten as they have no family that remembers them or no family that believes in God or purgatory they are in torment for a very long time. Thus our most sympathetic mother Mary has been coming to earth to ask for us to help our brothers and sisters in purgatory on their behalf. I think it was Mary who said something about for every soul we help get to heaven that soul will be so grateful that they will pray unceasingly before the throne of God until you are at their side.
Does this help you to understand why we offer our suffering for the poor souls?
I have more information but I don’t want to confuse you. Let me know if you ahve any questions but this is the basics of suffering for souls in purgatory. Oh and I should add that suffering can be anything from not wanting to clean the house but doing it anyway to dying of cancer. All is accepted through Mary and all is needed. Mary is the advocate for poor souls.
