Gloating over the bad that happens to an enemy

I am under the impression that it is wrong to “Gloat” or rejoice over the bad that happens to an enemy. Where in scriptures and in the teaching of the church is it proscribed? Why would it be a bad thing … aren’t you just agreeing with divine justice?

I tend to agree with the principle, but can’t find the relevent scriptures or teaching.
It we have the natural power to ‘judge’ or discriminate who might be an enemy, then wouldn’t we also have the natural right to rejoice when something bad happens to them?

I know that it says in the Bible that we should love our enemy, to turn the other cheek, and so on. I’m sure that others will respond with the specific Biblical passages.

But it is difficult to do. I grew up being that “kid that everyone picked on” over many years with no friends. Well in college, I found out that one of them had dropped out of high school and was then just getting his G.E.D. At the time, it made me feel really good that someone who had called me names, played mean pranks on me, and so on was in that situation, while I was in college. But I realized that while it felt good, it was probably wrong of me to feel that way.

Prayer and time (for reflection and such) has helped!
