It’s funny how one little post talking about GW will always, no matter how you do it, bring out such anger. Everyone who got angry, just relax, and just think a little before you tell me that I’m the reason for the troubles in the world by making you think a little outside the box.
I’m not mocking my faith, yours or anyone’s at all, but I am knocking the idea that a theory is to be taken as the Gospel. So please just relax, breath in slowly and remember we’re talking here and not attacking. Now breath out, and just try to r-e-l-a-x. please.
Well of course this thread was started in a way to provoke a response. You start a thread about how you were martyered for questioning global warming, it’s going to provoke a response. Then add the theory that global warming is based on blind faith and not science, and you are guaranteed a lively debate. Don’t throw gasoline on a fire and then wonder why the the flames are so high.

. Are you accusing Archbishop Celestino Migliore of treating global warming as a faith? After all, as the Permanent Observer of the Holy See at the United Nations, he has made many statements acknowledging the scientific validity and reality of climate change and global warming. Since Archbishop Celestino Migliore is the voice of the Holy See to the UN, I would imagine that the Pope agrees with the official statements made by the Archbishop. I don’t know how important it is for Catholics to walk in lock step with the Church on social and political issues, but it does not appear that you are doing so in this case.

Geocentrism, anyone?

I think that after 100 million Americans shovel out of the worst snowstorm in decades, many of them will be willing to rethink their position on Global Warming. :winter:

No, no that’s the butterfly effect: the glaciers massively melting away rise the level of the oceans, that in turn creates an array of cascading environmental reactions, which ultimately lead to you guys in the US experiencing this type of temperature/weather. So if it gets colder, it means it’s getting warmer:D

Yeah, ya know, I always wondered about that butterfly thing.

I mean like, ONE butterfly in Iowa could trigger a typhoon in Japan.

Just think what a billion jillion butterflies in Iowa could do. It could be a major force for good or for evil. Not sure which.

But in either case, it could … wait, though, wouldn’t all those butterflies cancel one another out?

[OR … ARE those butterflies already causing problems over there? Like those floods in Australia. Of course, the butterflies in Iowa are DEAD, frozen to death by global warming. Oh the humanity. But anyway, what if there were butterflies in Chile? Do they even have butterflies in Chile? After all, Chile is a third world country, right?]

You get where I’m going with this, right?]

I feel like I’m on stage, tapping on the microphone while asking is this thing on?? It’s funny how people pick the lines they want to read and then try to say that I’m now accusing the Church of wrong doing. Could you please just read a little more then just one line… I’m not saying anything about the Church… Hello “tap-tap”, is this thing on? Hey everyone please don’t forget to be good to your waitress, they’ve been good to you. Thanks for coming out, you’ve been great, Drive safely.👍
I just wish it were true. I woke up to -27 degrees this morning. So I am urging all of you to please, leave your cars running, install coal furnaces and breathe more.

Walter is correct. 👍 Those of us who believe it is bunk are heretics. This is the biggest fraud in a long time, but certainly not the last. By the way folks, lighten up, will you?

That’d be a question for Al Gore: But sir, what do you make of the butterflies in Iowa, frozen to death by global warming? 😛 He’s the same guy who managed not to laugh while he was brilliantly demonstrating on Oprah a few years ago how within decades Florida will lose a little more than half its current geography due to rising water levels.

I’m doing my part. My car is running bad, :banghead: my house is drafty so I need turn up my heater. :winter: Any more suggestions?

But that shows the power of propaganda, though. I mean being able to convince the media and (I assume) a considerable portion of the population that X is happening when there’s evidence left and right that contradicts the reality of X.

We have faith in God’s mercy and forgiveness if we deliberately put ourselves in His Hands.

They have “the sky is falling”:

Woe is us; assume the position; the end of the world; all is lost.

Well, it fits the second definition:

“2. a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects”. – dictionary.com

The notion of global warming as a religion is true in the sense there is a lot of faith involved. Some of my friends belong to the global warming faith, and I’ve gone with them to their gatherings. Their prophet is Al Gore and one of the presenters (priestesses) at one of their faith gatherings gushed how she had actually met Al Gore. They would also pat themselves on the back about the hybrid cars they were driving. They would discuss sin and repentance–they confessed how they had previously sinned by keeping applicances plugged in and using light bulbs, but are now repenting by using CFL lights, etc. I almost expected an altar call.

Furthermore, they had a strong sense of original sin–that is, how humanity is somehow bad and is ruining creation. They exuded the feeling that they really hate humanity and the earth would be better off without us. And now, not only the earth, we are already polluting the moon and Mars with our spacecraft. The embattled remnant of true believers.

If global warming is a bad thing, you would think that evidence to the contrary would be good news. But no, anything that could show it wasn’t happening they vehemently reject. They chortle with glee at any evidence that supports their faith. They actually welcome anything that proves global warming! They want it to happen!

That seems odd, if global warming is a bad thing after all. But, I guess every religion has its hypocrites. Al Gore rides in a limosine and lives in a big mansion.

What is the reality of X?

What is the reality of x? I was talking about propaganda in general whereby one thing is repeated over and over again so as to make people believe it’s true, but people can readily see that it has no basis in reality. Since this thread is about global warming as a religion, what I had in mind was a consistent, verifiable, increase in temperature, as opposed to occasional snow and unusually cold temperatures in places not known for being winter wonderlands.

There is no doubt in my mind that the mean atmospheric temperature at the surface of the earth is rising. How much we contribute to that, as opposed to it being a natural phenomenon I don’t know, but I am convinced we are aggravating the situation unnecessarily.

We are stewards of this earth, we should have the attitude that we will care for this world, it’s our duty.

We ought to also take practical steps to deal with the situation as it worsens.

I see. If you would, could you share what the reality is? In your estimation, are the temperatures on the earth overall staying the same, getting warmer or getting colder?

Did you have some particular consistent, verifiable data points in mind on the subject of global warming? Could you share those?

Thanks!
Your friend.

We have fallen victim to the evils of monosyllabism.

Temperatures are not rising.

Temperatures are not falling.

Temperatures are fluctuating.

I know, I know … we strive and desire simplicity.

We crave simple answers.

We CRAVE simple answers.

We ardently desire and demand SIMPLE answers.

UP

down

Temperatures are going up.

a monosyllable.

up.

But, alas and alack, temperatures are FLUCTUATING.

Just as they always have FLUCTUATED

And it’s not always George Bush’s fault.

Sometimes. But not always.

Good observations.

There are holocaust deniers all over the place, so I’ve decided start a counter movement by becoming a Denier myself. I already have a beginning: a denial of man-caused global warming. I might move on by denying that the Crusades ever happened, and that European colonialism ever existed, and follow it by a denial of whites’ enslavement of blacks. Then I can deny that Europeans ever waged war against and displaced indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere. Then there are the Palmer Raids and McCarthy hearings that I can claim never happened. How about sexism? Surely the oppression of women never existed either.
Then there are the nukings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that never happened.
Some other things that never existed or happened:
The KKK
George W. Bush
The Inquisition
The persecution of Galileo
Jefferson’s letter to the Danbury Baptists
The Catholic Church and hence, Pope Pius XII
“World Opinion”
Maybe I can even put down “Denier” as my race on the census survey.
Man, this is great; I feel better already because there is no longer any reason for me to feel guilty about white man’s [specifically white Christian man’s] sins against humanity since those sins never existed.
I’m sure others here must feel the same way and can add to this list, and I welcome their (name removed by moderator)ut.
