I had a really nice long talk with my friend who is a priest a few towns from me . we talk on the phone and he is an awesome priest and we agree 99.9999% in an orthodox way of Catholic living and teachings. I have to disagree with him on one topic. I know that when we die. we will be resurrected according to scripture and Catholic teachings. I feel that if you are not blessed with a ballet dancer body whether male or female and cursed with a large frame and being obese or with a birth defect.or whatever. you would think that in your glorified body it would be perfect and which ever way you want it to be. He says no… you will have those same a tributes in Heaven like on earth. if you have knurled fingers from arthritis or you have whatever you will be stuck with it for eternity. If that is the case Lord make me an angel instead . when it comes to our physical nature the only hope is the glorified body. What is your opinion. He goes with the fact Jesus still had the nail holes in his hands and feet and the gash in his side. but that was for proof to Doubting Thomas. I hope when He comes to judge the living and the dead that all the wounds he carries and we carry will be banished for all eternity.

Who is it that decides what is beautiful and what isn’t? What one person finds unnatractive another may find beautiful. It’s our souls that make it to heaven, not our worldly bodies. And actually the priest was touching on this today at Mass… look at Jesus’ body when he died compared to being perfect when he was reserected. Our earthly bodies are suspeptable to injury, disease, death, and decay while our immortal bodies will be just that.

true… that is very true… Okay I don’t like some of the ways I look. I wonder if you are glorified. will you have a body that you will be totally comfortable in. Like let’s say you are really obese and you deeply desire to be a ballerina. will you get that build in heaven since that is what you truly desired on earth. you being anyone… It’s hard to explain it. or if you are really tiny and want to be a body builder and look like mr universe. would you in your glorified body?? I always assumed you would be in the body you want once glorified. maybe I am wrong. hope i am not…

Yes, when we die, but when Jesus comes back and raises all from the dead, our souls will indeed be united with our earthly-but-glorified bodies.

The only thing I’ve heard about this is that the martyrs will generally keep the wounds they suffered at death since it is their crown of glory.

St. Thomas Aquinas teaches that the spirit, that is, the will, has perfect control over a glorified body. While a glorified body is physical, it is not a mere natural body, but a deified body. If you will to be somewhere, you will be there (just like Our Lord appeared in the locked upper room). I personally think we might be able to transform the appearance of our glorified bodies at will…this is just speculation, but think about Our Lady who, in various apparitions, has appeared with different characteristics. As “Our Lady of Guadalupe” she looks Hispanic, but as “Our Lady of China” she looks quite Asian.

Just as God created Adam and Eve without any defect in their bodies, so will he restore us at the resurrection with perfect bodies without any defect. This does not mean that all humans will rise the exact same size and shape as human nature allows for some latitude in the stature of human bodies. However, God will fix what might be excessive or lacking according to each person’s specific body. Birth defects, abnormalities, etc, will not be a part of our glorified bodies. Heaven is a state of perfection and perfect happiness and our resurrected bodies will take part in that perfection and happiness.

First of all, birth defects and physical ailments like you describe come from the fall of mankind and the sin nature, so our glorified bodies will no longer contain the effects of the fallen nature of man. That someone can even believe that is beyond me. What about someone born blind or crippled in this life? They will have to go through eternity blind and crippled?? That makes no sense. What about conjoined twins?? They will go through eternity conjoined and if one twin rejects God they both go to hell because their physical condition can’t be changed?? Jesus deliberately kept the nail holes in His hands as an eternal reminder of what He did for us, that’s all that is. Our glorified bodies will be in the condition they would have been if there had never been a fall of mankind. There’s a huge difference between beauty as far as hair color and eye color which might not change, and downright birth defects that interfere with a person’s way of living. There is no sickness in Heaven so why would there be birth defects there? What does that say about Heaven and God if He leaves people crippled and blind for eternity? No in our afterlife we will be whole. 👍

I like that idea. 🙂 Like when you are resurrected you get to pick your own avatar and choose what you want your body to look like. 🙂 I do know that no signs of the fall of mankind will exist in Heaven but I assumed we would look like how we look now just minus flaws and look the way we would look if disease and birth defects never existed. But I like the idea of picking how our new body will look. 👍

What if they were beheaded or burned to death and disfigured?? I don’t think martyrs would want to keep that as a sign.

How would your priest friend or any of us know what our glorified body will look like. I am lucky as I can’t expect much improvement, but for those that don’t have the body of a bronzed Anzac I hope they will be remarkably improved as it will improve the surrounding ambiance of Heaven.
All giggles aside, I have great hopes for a recreated physical heaven, but I cannot comprehend how big it is going to have to be to hold the generations of the saved throughout the thousands of years the earth has been around. But really all this imagining is childish silliness as we just cannot comprehend the power of God and His creative powers.
I am a bit sad that my wife and I will not be married in Heaven, but this doesn’t mean we cannot be together.(My wife thinks a bit of a break may be a real heaven). It may be that in the sight of God these things will not matter.

All our childish imaginings of heaven can only be supported in the promises of Christ that we will be happier than we can comprehend in the arms of our Creator. Everything else is sheer supposition based on an infantile comprehension of things about which we have no knowledge.

I agree with you in that it can be childish and that we will have more bliss glory happiness joy than we can comprehend. BUT… at the same time. It is fun to imagine. and for people that have a body they can’t stand like this woman I know… she is obese and she tried everything to get thin and can’t she cried in tears of hopelessness. then you have the ballerinas (she wished she could be one) that have that perfect body that is a work of art. and they are able to perform living art… The hope i hold for this woman and for people that got screwed in this life bodywise is the glorification of the body. and when my priest friend told me we may carry our bodily short comings like Christ with his wounds, in heaven.I’d much rather be an angel. that is my point. But i know that in heaven it won’t matter. but still…

Having the body of a Greek god, I tried ballet, but the shin splints finally got to me. I believe that such people as your friend can rest assured that she will have the beauty her nature before the Fall gave her. How silly we are to let such self disgust blind us to our beauty of His created to the Creator. I have never done anything with my hands but in wood work I made a little bookcase, which I still have in a pride of place. Even the lowest of His creations will share in His glory as His created.
I just hope the state of my soul which is looking like something the cat would hesitate to drag in is even worthy of the laundry of His house of many rooms.
