I have read that Glossolalia (Speaking in in tongues) is a gift from God.

Also…

I am under the impression that a sign of demonic possession, is infact speaking languages that one doesn’t know how to normally speak.

So which is it? Can someone help me understand the difference?

Thanks

Could be either depending on the situation…

I read a term in my medical dictionary MANY years ago; Idioglossia; Idio; In ones own language/form; and Glossa or tounge. Idioglossia, baby talk, baby jiibberish.

What you describe is merely a fable, like in the Exorcist, the possessed linda blair speaking in a language she never studied.

While it is possible I suppose for a human to do this due to some childhood memory of hearing a person speak it, along with great retention, has any credible human witnessed it???

I do not personally believe in “on earth” demonic possession, as the Exorcist portrays, it is a mental condition.

Some can choose to follow Satan, but they know reality from fantasy.

That is why the Church teaches that when the Holy Spirit imparts the gift of tongues on a person, He also imparts the gift of interpreting tongues on another member of the community. The two always go together if they are from God.

Actually, excorcism and possession is real. Just ask Fr. Amorth, and The Chruch. Ask the Pope. The devil exists.

I understand that a person can believe they are possessed, but IMO God does not permit demonic possession of living souls that are righteous.

ACTUALLY saying a person is possessed by a demon? How can that be defacto proven?

Every Diocese has an exorcist on staff. Apparently the Church believes this can and does happen. Their identity is generally kept hidden, since it would tend to bring out the wackos who would like to blame demon possession for behavior.

HI Corki,

So if I understand your response correctly, if someone starts speaking in another language and someone else in the room understands and communicates with that person in that language then it’s ok?

and…

If someone starts speaking in another language and nobody understands then that’s demonic possibly?

Also… the language being spoken… does it have to be a real language like Latin, German, etc, or just “gibberish-talk” ?

I understand the general teaching is the Church believes it, that does not make it defacto authentic.

The MIND is so powerful, science for thousands of years can still not decipher what is hidden inside.

What I am saying is HOW can that be proven?? It can’t be. Various biblical passages may refer to it, but the bible is full of misunderstood aphorisms and metaphoric/didactic phrases.

Where does the Church teach this?

also, regarding “speaking in tongues,” according to the Catholic Church… does this mean speaking in a language other then your own such as Spanish, or Italian, Latin, French, or does it mean gibberish, mumbling, so called “baby talk”? 🤷

I don’t think it’s that specific. The person given the gift to interpret tongues doesn’t have to directly communicate with the person speaking in tongues like a conversation.

Thomas Aquinas taught that speaking in tongues always was a natural language. I am not sure the Church has authoritatively spoken on that. But it must be understood in some manner.

According to many Exorcists, speaking in different tongues or languages is a sign of possession. This is true.

So could this be demonic? Could the demons be trying to confuse us and take out attention away from God?

Isn’t it better to pray and meditate on the Rosary instead of talking gibberish and jumping around?

I am with you here. God’s power is supreme. He has given us free will. So why would He allow our free will to be overridden? We can choose to be evil.

Throughout the world? I believe the Vatican does have exorcists but I am happy not to believe in demonic possession - human beings can do so much evil all by our little selves

When Jesus told the apostles to spread the Word, they were worried that they would not be understood by Gentiles. They were given the gift of tongues to spread the Word. There was a purpose for the gift and it was not gibberish.

I don’t know or believe in demonic possession but I have heard Christians “speak in tongues”, even Catholics who go to charismatic services. It sounds like gibberish and I have not witnessed any healing.

I was at a mass once where the priest said that he witnessed an exorcism once where nothing was working. Then one of the priests prayed in tongue over the possessed person and the evil spirit left.

Also: St Paul wrote in the New Testament, ‘I wish you all spoke tongues.’

Yes, the evil spirits can speak in every tongue, they are angelic beings, language isn’t a barrier to them. I’ve read of situations where the deliverance person had to command the possessed person to speak in English.

The Catholic Charismatic Renewal has been approved by the Popes.
During the International Charismatic Renewal Mass with the Pope each year all the charismatic do pray and sing in tongues before the Pope himself.

During the very first Catholic Charismatic Renewal international mass in Rome with the Pope as he was walking up the church all the charismatic started praying out loud in tongues.
The pope turned around and said; ‘This, is the church.’ An act of full support
that the charismatic renewal is part of the church.

It was part of the early church. The Apostles prayed in tongues at Pentecost. And when they baptised Christians the Christians prayed in tongues too.
It’s in the bible.

During the second Vatican council the Pope asked everyone to pray for a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The charismatic renewal followed. And pope John Paul spoke and wrote about the charismatic renewal. He said that the charisms are for building up the church and that we need them.

I’ve heard people in the deliverance/ healing ministry praying in tongues.
My gran aunt prays in tongues, and the local charismatic prayer group headed over by religious order priests, they pray in tongues too

It says in the bible, ‘We do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Holy Spirit asks on our behalf.’ Paul wrote, ‘Pray that you will be able to pray tongues with understanding because a person who prays tongues does not know what he is saying, but speaks incomprehensible mysteries to God.’
