Every ten years it seems there is a witch to burn surrounding food. Fats, Carbs, Sugars, Anything with the color “White”, MSG, now “Gluten”.

Yes yes, I know, some people are actually born with an autoimmune disorder but sadly the number of people chasing this fad (30% of our population) doesnt add up to the 1% of celiacs.

Im gonna argue its not the Gluten thats the issue, or any other malarky people are chasing but rather a spiritual condition. Teach our citizens to embrace and promote homosexuality, abortion, abuse of substances both legal and illicit, and finally promote and despise anything having to do with the almighty, what are you left with?

An entire population with broken souls, and traumatized minds from all the horrific crud that is normalized and cheered on. Somethings gotta give! There has to be an answer!

“However ive had 2 abortions already, I dont wanna admit to myself that I have murdered my children, I have divorced my partner even though Christ said not to, Not to mention I dont wanna hear ANYTHING related to a morality surrounding Gods laws nor do I want to admit its existence due to my broken lifestyle cut off from God”

…ITS GOT TO BE THE GLUTEN! 😉

When I first saw the title of this thread I thought you were talking about something entirely different, that I have thought of myself, that I will add to this…perhaps this gluten-free craze is an attack on the Holy Eucharist? I wonder how many people are not receiving Communion because of the small amt of gluten present. Actually, they do make low-gluten hosts for sensitive people-you just have to ask for it. Having said that, I happen to be sensitive to gluten but I just offer up any symptoms I might get from the small amt in the Sacred Host.

To address your ideas, there may be some truth to what you’re saying. Psychologists call it “transference,” where emotions toward one person can be transferred to another. In this case, perhaps our deep awareness that something is very wrong is being transferred to any and all other things, to prevent us from doing what we really have to do…look UP and look within.

Yes, gluten, which God put into wheat and other grains, has now become the enemy, the scourge of mankind. Forget ISIS. Forget the cultural and moral rot that permeates society. Gluten is far easier to attack. In some cases, is it not actually a rejection of creation which may follow from a rejection of God? These same people that want the gluten out are horrified at genetically modified ingredients. I swear, I feel like having bumper stickers made that say "Darwin put gluten in wheat you !$%*$#$^s! Otherwise, it is a simple-minded following of the other sheep in the herd for 98-99% of the population.

I think greed drives food manufacturers to make items cheaper and more dangerous for consumption to gain a bigger profit and therefore cause mass health issues.

You might be on to something. This guy seems to get it. 😃 youtu.be/Oht9AEq1798

Fad diets are just that - fad diets. In truth, as most any dietician will tell you, the key to a healthy diet is balance. Yes, we in the US eat too many processed foods, and even the non-processed foods we eat are usually out of proportion. There are genuinely some people with celiac disease, for whom gluten is actually dangerously toxic (for many with celiac, even the low amount of gluten in low-gluten hosts can cause permanent damage and thus should request to receive only from the cup - special arrangements should be made between the communicant and the pastor if the pastor does not ordinarily offer the cup to his congregation). But for the majority, a gluten-free diet is the same as the low-carb diets from years past - a fad that has no basis in research or fact. There is no reason a person without celiac disease should put him/herself on a diet for people with celiac (gluten free), just as there is no reason why a person without diabetes should put him/herself on a diabetic diet (low carb).

Though I do agree that fad diets can be due to spiritual crises. Fad diets are based in vanity/vainglory - in an effort to combat the effects of gluttony. Of course, as you know, vanity/vainglory and gluttony are two of the seven deadly sins. If a person is exhibiting any factor of any of the seven deadly sins, he/she is in a spiritual crisis because the deadly sins remove our focus from God and places it on ourselves.

I don’t think a gluten free diet is a “fad.” There are some people who cannot have gluten and have a legitimate gluten sensitivity.

It is true that some people truly cannot have gluten (we’ve mentioned this above). And there are many who believe that they may be sensitive to gluten (though the science is out on how common non-celiac-gluten-sensitivity actually is and how that number compares to the actual number of people who claim to be gluten-sensitive). But there is a much larger group of people that have decided to go gluten-free primarily because it’s the “healthy thing to do” - and have no gluten sensitivity of any kind. This is what I meant by “fad” diet. To me, for the majority of people on gluten-free diets, “gluten free” is today’s “low carb”. And there is also no reason for items that would be naturally gluten free (such as most fruits and vegetables, not to mention many juices, coffees, and teas, and a whole host of things that shouldn’t have gluten in the product anyway) to have stickers or whatnot mentioning that they are gluten free.

I do not have celiac disease however I am on a gluten free diet & I find it completely offensive & ignorant that someone like me is being judged as a simple minded sheep, in spiritual crisis or that it’s acceptable to make a sweeping statement that if one does not have celiac disease then they should not be on a gluten free diet when they have not walked in my shoes. There are many gastrointestinal disorders that might cause someone to eliminate gluten, lactose, sugar, complex carbs etc. Celiac disease & diabetes are not the only diseases that cause food restriction.

I suffer from inflammatory bowl disease (an autoimmune condition) which means I have an inflammed, overactive, damaged intestinal tract & whilst I am not allergic to gluten like celiac suffers, gluten certainly exacerbates my condition & eating it gives me immense abdominal pain & some other very embarrasing syptoms that I am not going to get into on this thread, the reaction is very similar to getting lemon juice in a cut, whilst the lemon juice does not cause the cut, it does cause the cut to sting because the open wound is sensitive. In fact, most people who suffers from any kind of gastrointestinal disorder or digestive system damage will cut out or limit one food or another, this is not because the food causes their condition but because the food exacerbates it. That’s why doctors often suggest to suffers like myself that we keep a food diary to help identify “triggers” or to go on an elimination diet. Also everyone is different, my IBD reacts to gluten whereas my sister who also has IBD is fine with gluten but reacts to lactose, so there is no one size fits all. If you add up all the people who suffer from any kind of gastrointestinal disorder I’m sure you’ll find it’s a sizeable chunk of the population, not just 1%.

Another point I’d like to make is that conditions like IBD have extremely embarrassing symptoms & many suffers don’t feel comfortable talking about it or explaining it to people so may just simply explain their food choices as being for “better health”. Only my family & close friends know I suffer from IBD & there have been other people in my life (work colleagues) who have judged my eating habits as a “misguided lifestyle choice” even though it’s absolutely none of their business.

Also, even if a person does not have an official medical diagnosis, it does mean that they do not have a problem, the medical profession does not know everything & one of my pet hates is someone telling others how they “should” or “shouldn’t” feel. If someone says they have a food sensitivity then take them at their word, only an individual themselves knows how they physically feel in their own body & if someone finds they feel better by cutting out something like gluten then great, good for them, medical diagnosis or not. Science does not have all the answers & as Catholics we should know that better than anyone.

Having said all that of course there are some people who cut out food groups simply because they’re on some fad diet & yes in some cases it’s down to pure vanity alone & we should pray for them. The media constantly bombards us with images of the “ideal” figure which is near impossible for the average person to obtain unless they’re genetically born that way & there are very real societal pressures to conform, especially for young people. Remember the size zero trend or the more recent thigh gap trend? Young people have starved themselves & ended up in hospital because of it, in fact some people can become so obsessed with food that it may become an eating disorder.

Human behaviour is complex & sometimes it’s important to show charity & not condemn people

Excuse me, but this is incredibly uncharitable. There’s absolutely no reason for someone to even hint at making light of someone for having abortions or for being divorced, let alone to actually look down on them.

Let’s keep in mind that people in the spiritual condition you outline are souls that are suffering. They need our prayers and our sacrifices. They need friendship and love. They are not enemies, and if they had half the graces you or I have had, perhaps they would be living Saints.

They don’t need to be mocked, or to have their spiritual condition linked to whether or not they happen to buy gluten-free products.
