Gluten-free hosts aren’t gluten-free

I regularly receive the low gluten host. According to the manufacturer, there is less than 10ppm. In the US and the UK, anything in the store labeled “Gluten Free” is guaranteed to be less than 20ppm.

So the low gluten host actually qualifies as gluten free according to the FDA.
Someone I know at my parish with Celiac has told me the same thing. She and her daughter both have it and both receive the low-gluten hosts without any issue.

My niece’s allergy is so severe that she’s not supposed to be in the same room with gluten products. You can guess how successful she is at making that happen consistently.
That is interesting.

How does the gluten know that she is around? And I don’t mean to be funny, but wheat, or whatever she is allergic to, would have be in contact in some manner. If the allergen is encased in plastic or put away, away from your niece, how would there be contact?

An allergen isn’t “after” the allergic person. Well, other than in the case of bees or other insects. I swear they know I am allergic and fly after me.

The problem is, as others had said that a preparation 100% non gluten is not done with wheat. Look at the composition of gluten free food: no wheat at all. Others cereals.

If we removed gluten from wheat, as for low gluten host, some traces can be found…

Jesus can only come in wheat bread.

That may be a little exagered, and perhaps she can at least come in a church building.

But severe allergy is something serious.
My aunt has a mortal allergy to fish. She cannot eat, or even touch a product made with fish, or be in contact with an objecy with touched fish (contamination). In her house, nobody can eat fish at all, and they are very carreful yo not introduce any food that can have some traces of fish.
For family meetings we have to be prudent. One time, we have warned her that there will be a entree with fish. She was very upset. The danger is that someone may use the same knife for two different food.

To conclude, gluten is present in more food than fish. Flour is volatile and package never watertight. If there is flavor in her own house the niece will come in contact one day or the other…

Actually many allergens can pose problems for people just by being exposed to them via air.

There wouldn’t be. But can you guess how often gluten products are around her at school, for example, without being contained in some way?
An allergen isn’t “after” the allergic person.
I confess I don’t get this comment. Of course gluten isn’t “after” her, much like peanuts aren’t “after” those with severe allergies to them. And yet some allergies are so pronounced that being near peanuts can cause a reaction.

There is no minimum gluten content. It just must be naturally separated from the wheat flour, without additives. My understanding is that there are hosts with no biologically relevant amounts of gluten remaining.

As for the wine, parishes can provide a dedicated chalice for those with gluten intolerance. A fresh bottle would be opened and poured directly into it to avoid gluten contamination.

Because the Lord established the sacraments. They’re not ours to change.
So without a doubt the Lord established that a host must have a fraction of an amount of gluten “at least” to be valid? As a non-Catholic I am just trying to understand your meaning of this. So an all powerfull GOD needs a fraction of gluten to be “physically present”?

God could if He wanted too, but it’s not guaranteed.

So an all powerfull GOD needs
God needs nothing. However, Jesus, the second person of the Godhead, while on earth, used bread and wine to institute the Eucharist. Not pizza and coke, not rice cakes and punch but wheat bread and wine. He then instructed his apostles to recreate this meal in his memory. It is through(and Matthew I know you are going to hate this word)obedience to Jesus as to why we must use the matter of bread and wine in the celebration of the Eucharist.

Same. Fiancée has horrible celiac allergy. She communicates in exactly this way.

They should really be able to accommodate by having a small chalice for only you, with only a tiny amount of wine in it.

If your parish is unwilling to accommodate that, then there is a problem with your clergyman’ understanding of what he’s payed to do and you should contact your archdiocese.

The priest at my local parish has incredibly complex food allergies. He’s worse than I am. But he still partakes and finishes whatever wine is left (at least that’s what I think I see him do when he goes behind the wall). I’m not going to particularly complain about not having a segregated cup but I could see why others might.

Well, if you are happy with your arrangement that is good.

Although I think he wouldn’t mind, and you could probably work something out. But if you’re happy with what you have, good.

I’m not talking about people being allergic to the “smell” of peanuts. I’m talking about people being allergic to peanuts. As far as I know, everyone here is talking about allergens that aren’t contained and how these impact individuals. I’m not sure why you think allergens are uniformly and consistently contained.
