Has the church done anything to address the problem of Communion for gluten intolerant people?

Yes, they offer the precious blood to those who are gluten intolerant!

Very low gluten hosts are also available.

Here is the USCCB’s page called “A Short Introduction to Holy Communion and Celiac Sprue Disease.”

In our parish, Father consecrates a separate cup of the Precious Blood for a woman who has celiac disease. She cannot receive from the common cup because she cannot tolerate ANY gluten and even contact with the cup after someone before her has received the Host can bring on a reaction. So she informs Father before Mass and he consecrates a small cup for her, then she comes up after the rest of the congregation has received and Father retrieves the cup from the altar and she receives. Works fine, it’s discreet and not distracting and very reverently done.

IIRC, I read somewhere that the Church is experimenting with low-gluten hosts, but removing gluten completely changes the matter so much as to invalidate the sacrament. So if you have zero tolerance to gluten, the Precious Blood is your only option. Talk to the parish priest about accommodating this special need (especially if he needs to provide a separate cup.)

We do the same thing with the two women who have ciliac disease in our parish. They come into the sacristy before the mass they are attending and tell the sacristian to set out their cup. We bought and tried the low gluten hosts but they look sort of like burnt potato chips and the women didn’t really like them, They said it didn’t seem like receiving communion so they are happy with just receiving the Precious Blood.

Yes, there are available, approved extremely low gluten Hosts, or the reception of the precious Blood only.

Yes.

There are a variety of options for someone with glucose intolerance. They depend upon the severity of the illness , what the person wishes to do and the guidelines of the church.

Here’s another more detailed reference.
