I need help. I am currently visiting my grandparents out of town, and we just had dinner. I had a plate of chop suey and a plate of rice. Not knowing this, my mom came in with burgers from a restaurant. I had one. Did I commit gluttony because I had that burger?

Second, are we still required to abstain from meat on fridays? If so, it’s too late for me. Should I not have a beer tonight?

I’m not in my hometown right now, and if I am not in a state of grace, I don’t hknow where I would have a chance to go to confession between now and sunday. can I still recieve communion, or not?

And am I being scrupulous? I’ve been told that I’m awfully hard on myself. What’s your call?

Relax. No you did not commit the sin of gluttony, and no you didn’t commit a sin by eating meat.

First of all, we are not required to abstain from meat on Fridays, except during Lent, though abstaining from meat on Fridays is a beautiful tradition, and an excellent way to do penance.

You did not commit the sin of gluttony because you only ate on extra burger! No need to worry 🙂

Yes you can receive the Eucharist on Sunday!

If you seriously think you’ve committed a sin, say an Act of Contrition 🙂
God Bless :signofcross::byzsoc:

There is no Mortal Sin of Gluttony from eating that burger. In fact, if your mom bought the burgers intending for you to have one, then it would be possibly inhospitable for you to not have one without good reason (You were simply too full and could not eat another bite, for example). Gluttony is an inordinate appetite for rich foods; one who is gluttonous prefers such foods and indulges in them, making the act of eating done purely for the sensual pleasure of it. That is not to say we don’t eat to enjoy, but we eat primarily to nourish our bodies.

Fridays are still days of penance; outside of Lent, one is not required to abstain from meat, though abstinence is still highly recommended by the Church. One may substitute another form of penance on the Fridays outside of lent, with the exception of Solemnity’s. Solemnity’s are not observed as days of penance, when they fall on a Friday. Since you had the burger, choose another form of penance; you could offer up the beer you planned on having, or something else, or pray or do charitable acts. The important thing is that you do some act of penance on Friday in remembrance of Our Lord’s Passion.

A plate of rice and a plate of chop suey can be a big plate, or a small plate. Only you can judge if you ate more than you needed for a meal. At the most, venial sin may have been committed. And that would not prevent you from Holy Communion. You don’t need to go to confession for that, and the Eucharist Itself remits you from venial sins. Do not avoid Holy Communion unless you are sure you have committed mortal sin. And, yeah, you may be suffering from scrupulosity; especially if you habitually over-analyze situations like this, and see mortal sins where there isn’t. You might want to discuss this with a priest at your next opportunity for confession. The priest is better equipped to discern whether you suffer from scrupulosity rather than random posters on a message board.

Was it good? 😉

Eating a burger after chop suey sounds kinda unappetizing. And then drinking beer on top of that. I think I might be sick.
