I was watching Se7en, which got me to thinking about why each was a sin. I could easly see why Wrath, Pride, Greed, Covetetness, Lust. But, I can’t see how Sloth and Gluttony are sins. Bad habits yes but, so is smoking or drinking to much. Can ya’ll give me some insight into this?

Sloth is evil because it entails a waste of time, energy, talents and opportunities - and leads to stagnation and decadence. “Nothing shall come of nothing”. (King Lear).
Gluttony is evil because it harms both the mind and the body. Aristotle pointed out that the “happy mean”, i.e. principle of moderation, is at the basis of virtue. Gluttony is a form of excess in which bodily pleasure is put before everything else. It implies that physical satisfaction is more important than moral and social values…
