They thought it a trap. After all, they’d paid for the corn and then found the money they’d paid given back to them without their knowledge. They probably thought they would be accused of stealing the money and hiding it in the corn themselves. But, it was only Joseph’s way of caring for his brothers’ welfare, even though they didn’t recognize him as their brother.
