Gnostic Challenge to Early Catholic Church

Just reading up on the early church and was interested to see that the early Christian centres were all urban, literate and well connected with regards to transport and communications.
Antioch, Eddessa, Armenia, Rome, Alexandria and Carthage as well as the south western Byzantine (turkish) coast.

Also interested that after the couple of hundred years of Roman persecutions and suppression that the basic tenets of each of the areas were surprisingly equivalent.

Does anybody know much about the geographic beginnings of Gnostic Christianity. I have heard that there was a Gnosticism before Christianity and that a gnostic sect attached itself to the person of Jesus and became what was to become Gnostic Christianity.

I’m wondering what the origins and spread of this gnostic Christianity was as opposed to the orthodox catholic faith mentioned above.

Yes, there were various schools of gnosticism. There was even Jewish gnositicism.

Some say that Hasdism still is.
