Are you referring to Gnosticism? Catholic Encyclopedia has a good write up at newadvent.org/cathen/06592a.htm .

And the heresy is not dead yet! There are a number of Gnostic churches still about.

Gnosticism was more a school of thought than a separate Church in early Christianity.

Some fairly scholarly works I picked up at my university were these ones:
Couliano, Ioan P. The Tree of Gnosis.
Luttikhuizen, Gerard P. Gnostic Revisions of Genesis Stories and Early Jesus Traditions.

Basically the Gnostics were/are a bunch of heretics.
Remember the Gospel of Judas on National Geographic. That was them.

Sure—The Discovery Channel is a Gnostic church. While the rest of us celebrate the Risen Lord during Holy Week, TDC holds its Mass of the Sainted Gnostics.

Happens like clockwork, every year.
