Gnoticism

I don’t quite recall anything about Gnosticism other than they had a certain dislike of the flesh and that we as Catholics are sopposed to look upon it as heresy. Could anybody tell me anything about Gnosticism or refer me to something that I could read up on it? Thanks and God Bless.

One of the other big theological talking points was the Demiurge – the Old Testament God was not actually God but a malevolent creator.

As for sources, Wikipedia has a long article with lots of references. It’d be a good starting point. The Gnostic gospels make for some fun reading too – the Gospels of Thomas, Judas, Mary, and so on.

Yeah. The Gnostic heretics were anti-sacramentalist, just as a lot of Protestants are today, unfortunately. Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Oriental Orthodoxy, and Anglicanism inherently sacramental in their worldview, believing that grace can be conveyed through material means, whereas Prots and Gnostic heretics believe that material is a hindrance to true “worship” and we should free ourself from attachment to it.
