Sorry, this is an English language question.
What is it to go for a date?

First, I thought it was the first date of a possible relationship as girlfriend and boyfriend. I mean, the intention would be of a long time relationship, though they could not enjoy each other and go apart or become just friends.

Then, I read somewhere that “going for a date” was to have dinner with somebody with the intention of sleeping together in either’s home. It seemed everything was all right, single, married, divorced, I think I have seen it for gays…

Then, here, a married woman complained of not being able to “go for a date” with her husband. Now, I was confused. Going for a date with one’s own husband? It seemed to meant to go out and have a relaxed atmosphere that would prepare for a more intimate sexual relation otherwise impossible on the day-by-day stress.

I am interested in giving the words the exact meaning even if I am speaking a foreign language. if you feel spare your time answering to me, thank you.

Going for a date is simply spending time alone with someone with the understanding that you are both attracted to each other. It’s for the purpose of starting or continuing a romantic relationship. It certainly does NOT have to include sex, especially for those couples that are not married. For those couples that are married, it is still important to “go on a date” to spend quality time with that person where you can focus your attention on them.

In America, we say “to go ON a date”, and dates can happen between a man and a woman who are unmarried, a man and a woman who are married, a man and a man, or a woman and a woman. Dates are romantic in nature but do not necessarily lead to sex or even to another date, depending on the relationship status of the couple.

If you are going out with someone you have never met before in person, we call it “going on a blind date”.

If you and your partner are going out to dinner with another couple, we call it a “double date”.

If a person is about to do something that could change the course of their entire life (such as Mary Lou Retton competing in the Olympics for the U.S.), we call that “a date with destiny”.

Those pesky idioms!

the problem with that particular phrase “to go on a date” is that it can have so many different meanings, depending on context, as you may have already noticed, including ironic.

“I have a date with my pillow” is even a proper use of the term meaning that you are looking forward to going to sleep.

the word ‘date’ in these types of idioms specifically means an appointment at a pre-arranged time and place. you do not accidentally have a ‘date’ with someone or something.

so, “going on a date” means that the speaker has made an appointment to meet with someone at a pre-arranged time and place. the activity and/or activities that occur during the date are not actually implied within the phrase.
