Does God work through man in the way of artistic expression?

Powerful imagry.

Is this a part of spirituality in a potent way?

I love this link, I watched it twice. It is truely something that makes me much more interested in the catholic faith.

Can anyone add any comments pro/con on the influence of art on the person?

Art is a method of teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is the reason for every piece of art you see in any Catholic church.

Have you perused christusrex.org? It is one of the earliest sites on the internet. Back in the day, when I had my first internet connection through the university only (no internet in homes yet). I spent hours there, and I was atheist then. 🙂 They have images from Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry, available to download in very large format. I recommend it!

Years later when I began studying Catholicism, I found myself back at christusrex.org. I was trying to figure out the Liturgy of the Hours and what in the world it was. This is an astounding work of art, meant to be prayed. ❤️

The influence on the person, for me personally, it has a very large impact.

Unfortunately, christusrex.org has added more and more elements of antisemtism to their site. 😦

Did you happen to watch The World Over last night on EWTN? If not, there was a segment on there about sacred art making a comeback. One of the guest was Protestant, & when in college she majored? in modern art, & one thing led to another & she converted to Catholicism because of Barrouque (I know I misspelled). It inspired her so.
Anyway, I need to look back at the episode (actually I think it comes on again today) because they posted a website for some art exhibit w/new artist & the comeback of sacred art…I’ll get back with the site for you.

You are very kind to do that, I think I can go to that site via internet, but I need to know what podcast to click on.

Please give me any of your heartfelt thoughts, and opinions on the matter.

I appreciate your help/advice guidance on this question.

Any feedback, is welcome.

Hi SJ,

I didn’t want you to think I bailed out on you. 😉
I guess after I watched the episode Friday, I erased it off my dvr. But it will be re-aired again tomorrow at 9 am central time. I do have it set again to record just to get the link to that site. I also went to EWTN & that episode is not up yet. 🤷

But anyway, I am not an art expert by any means, but I will tell you that I do have a sense of awe even peace when I see sacred art. I can remember as a child going to Mass with my grandmother just being mesmerized by the artwork painted on the ceiling above & behind the altar at my local church. It was a depiction of heaven to my mind as a 5 year old back then is the best way to describe it. Jesus, the choirs of angels, all the Saints, the Blessed Mother. I’d sit there the whole hour just gawking at it just trying to figure out who everyone was.🙂 I haven’t been in that church in over 25 years, & that image has always been with me.

After clicking on the link you posted, it reminded me of the other night on EWTN, on one of Fr. Pacwa’s shows, he said that today if you were to have someone transcribe the bible by hand, add all the intricate artistic detail as the monks did when they were writing the bible, it would end up costing you $500,000!

So to simply answer your question, I have no doubt that God inspires men to use their artistic ability, to move us spiritually.

I’ll get back to you tomorrow with that site.

Take care & God Bless.

We were made in the image and likeness of God, and God came down and became Man, the image of God. There is a deep tie between the Incarnation and every artist and artwork on earth, and it is not without meaning that Jesus Himself built things. And God is Beauty Himself, while the Song of Songs goes into detail about how the Church, the Bride, is beautiful. So yes, spirituality includes art. Intimately, importantly.

Pope Benedict XVI has spoken about this topic somewhat. It’s a very important topic.

chiesa.espresso.repubblica.it/articolo/206168?eng=y talks about how all great works of art are an epiphany, an appearance, of God.

Something he said about stained glass in churches.

Art in the Compendium of the Catechism – why?

“Art always ‘speaks,’ at least implicitly, of the divine, of the infinite beauty of God, which finds its reflection in the icon par excellence: Christ the Lord, the image of the invisible God. Sacred images, with their beauty, are also heralds of the Gospel and express the splendor of Catholic truth, showing the supreme harmony between the good and the beautiful, between the 'via veritatis [way of truth]’ and the 'via pulchritudinis [way of beauty].’ While they give witness to the age-old and prolific tradition of Christian art, they encourage all, both believers and nonbelievers, to discover and contemplate the inexhaustible wonder of the mystery of redemption, continually providing a new impulse for the lively process of its inculturation in time.”

Thank you all for helping me see the chistian position on this question. I find it all to be very helpful, and enjoy it.

SJ, it’s not just visual art. If you’re interested in literature read up on Tolkien and his thoughts about God as Creator and literature!

I would answer Yes to your Question. I have personally felt the Love & devotion that went into the works of skilled Craftsmen & artisans as they constructed some of the Great Churches of the world.

The quality of work, the care & tender work that you can find in the delicate carvings and paintings within the Great Cathedrals is amazing. These works sing the praises of God to God by people who often volunteered their time & effort, in addition to their regular jobs, in order to create such wondrous Art within these Churches.

Just my opinion, But I bet its shared by many!

Regards
