God and Music

Music and song have long had a place in religious ritual. Many people find that they most easily feel the divine through music.

For those people, I’d like to hear what kind of music puts them in touch with the Ineffable being/Divine/Holy/universe.

Any particular songs, types of music, etc. What was playing the last time this happened to you?
 
Well you had to expect this answer eventually:

Gregorian Chant! 👍

I play it while I pray often, and it’s great for just relaxing you and blocking out distracting noises. It’s very comforting music…I can’t really explain why, it just makes me feel safe and secure, which I assosciate with God, so it is very fitting to hear during prayer.

Funnily enough I will also admit that the Celtic, upbeat songs make me feel completely happy, and so I feel a lot of God in them as well, and Christmas Carols, even secular ones, always put me in mind of Christ and being inside, warm, and secure.

Hmm…I didn’t realize I assosciated God with security so much until this post.
 
really, any type of music where people are passionately playing their instruments (this includes voice) for the purpose of praise. this could be classical, gregorian chant, contemporary Christian, organ, etc. as long as it is passionately played to praise God, i’m in.

I cant remember the songs which inspired me at church, but i find protestant songs more inspiring.

The non-religious song which gives me the spiritual experience (as an agnostic) is the “Never Ending Story”. Life is a Never Ending Story. I’d love to hear the story of God’s life. 🙂
 
I have to second the Gregorian chant… Love it!!! Just last night I was watching 300 with my son and we got into a discussion about how full orchestral music with all the movement and instrumentals can evoke the same… and that was an 18 yo boy saying that!
 
a world class symphony orchestra where the conductor and each musician is giving the finest performance of which he is capable (Cleveland rocks!)

Well, lately it has been Pink Floyd’s “On the Turning Away”. But I don’t suppose that is what you had in mind :).

I like to listen to David Broza, and there’s a song called, I think, “Peace” which I like. My rabbi sings it at services occassionaly and I have a good version of it done more professionally. If you (or anyone else) wants to leave me a private message with your email, I’d be happy to send the two tracks to you.
 
Most music accompanying Mass today I find uninspiring. Sometimes, I feel like waltzing down the aisle instead of concentrating on what is before me!
But also being a music director for a protestant church, I have grown to love traditional protestant hymns and contemporary music. There are some great things out there.
Gregorian Chant? If it’s not accompanying Liturgy, I don’t find it useful at all, but that’s just me.🙂
 
You know, for me, it is any song really that acknowledges God loves me. I don’t know why that touches me so deeply but I choke up everytime…😊
 
Holy God we praise thy name, has always given me the feeling that God was standing right next to me.🙂
 
My favorite music tends to be some of the following songs/hymns:

Blessed Assurance
Here I Am, Lord
It Is Well With My Soul
Come Holy Ghost
Jesus My Lord My God My All
Salve Regina

There are just too many to count!

Music which inspires? have to go first with U2 followed by Third Day for sheer praise.

Have to go with Celtic music too, reaches right to that nerve and calms it. Hymns like How Great thou art and always Christmas Carols, I agree. Then again my name is a joyous song. 😉 maybe thats why I adore music and like you said easily feel the Divine.

Most recent song would be “One that I waited for” by Disiple. Especially the part about Him making the rythm your heart makes.

Are you part of this chorus? It’s a beautiful piece (link worked fine). I’m often pleasntly surprised when music that is clearly christian puts me in a more receptive state of mind (as yours did).
