Ok, let’s say you are walking down the beach one day and suddenly there is a brilliant flash of light. There standing infront of you is God, just as you alwase pictured him. He tells you how proud he is of you for being such a devoted follower of him and he loves you very much, there’s just one problem. He hands you a small package, you open it, and inside is a Koran!!! Then wooosh he and the book are gone.

What would you do? Convert to Islam? Try to explain it away? What?
 
So He doesn’t actually tell me anything - He just shows me the book and woosh? I’d presume He wants me to read through it.
 
I would do the following:
  1. Think about what i just saw.
  2. Pray a Rosary about what i just saw.
  3. Talk to the Bishop of my Diocese ASAP.
  4. See if the revelation really makes sense. if by God you mean Christ then i see what you’re saying because God is a supernatural being taking the form of anything. He is mostly referred to as Father so i’d picture him as a man.
 
talk to my priest as soon as he is free to listen and follow his guidence 😃
 
Trust in the teachings of the Church which Jesus already established, knowing that it already has the fullness of Truth, and assume that it’s something not to be trusted until I talk to a spiritual adviser. I will know, at the very least, that God is not commanding me to convert to Islam.

In talking to my spiritual adviser, and through prayer, I would ascertain whether God was trying to tell me something very specific (unlikely, as God is never the author of confusion and mistrust), or if it was a trick of the Enemy’s. (Much more likely.)

Well others have given sound advice in how to handle such a situation. Speak with a trusted spiritual counselor…For we know that we are to “test the Spirits”…

That said - and looking precisely at what you say above and assuming that I am to draw some conclusion from it…I am immediately drawn to the latter part of the message…“there is just one problem”…and shows me the Koran…

What can this possibly mean if I am already praised for being a devoted follower of him?
My first thought is that the “Koran” is the “problem” that he is referring to.

I would have to pray on this to discern what problem there is with the Koran and what God wishes for me to do about it…OR…He would have to make clear to me that I am misreading His message…

If such a vision were to occur, it would simply reaffirm my decision to learn about the religions of the world. I would probably go home and look more closely at my copy of the Koran.

How often does God put on a light show for devoted followers?
 
Dear poster…
any traditional devout catholic nigerian (like me…minus the devout part) would tell you that its the moslems trying to deceive you,and its just another ploy of ‘‘bokoharam’’ to gain more suicide bombers.
Trust me, no christian in my part of the world especially with the current crises would ‘‘run and convert’’ just because of that little drama, instead it might worsen the crises and cause a full blown religious war!!
 
Given that so many teachings of Islam (as I understand them) seem to violate natural law, and presuming that God doesn’t contradict himself, I’d look for a way to “explain it away”. It would be easier to explain away since he didn’t leave the book with me. 🙂

I try not to “picture” God, because that involves a serious danger of idolatry, if indeed it isn’t intrinsically idolatrous.

Unless, of course, we are speaking of God the Son, Incarnate as Jesus.

But either way, the fact that a being who looked like my picture of God (whether Father or Son) told me something wouldn’t be of great importance.

I don’t worship my picture of God, or even my picture of God Incarnate, though the latter is a more defensible thing to have in my mind in the first place.

I worship the reality, which I know to be beyond any picture I could form.

Also, I don’t think your scenario is compatible with Islam. In Islam God is utterly transcendent and communicates to people through angels. Since (in Islamic belief) an angel appeared to Muhammad, not God himself, I would hardly be likely to convert to anything like traditional/orthodox Islam on the basis of such a revelation.

If I accepted it, I would probably find myself starting a new religion based on the Qur’an–or at least something that most Muslims would regard as a new religion.

That would definitely be a funny god and not all knowing, I may try to evaluate what happened using rationality and science.
If the book was gone as well, then there would be no material evidences of that situation, it could be just a delusion or a dream.😃
 
Some very well though out answers. This question isn’t realy about Islam. It’s just the religion that I chose to use because of it’s beleif in the same god as Christians. The point of the question is if a person would convert to another religion if they had a religiouse experience, or if they woul just try to explain it away as demonic activity or hallucination.

And the point of my reply is that it would depend on the specifics of the experience.

It would be pretty hard for one experience to convert me to anything at this point in my life. It certainly wouldn’t change my mind altogether.

St. Paul on the Damascus Road is the classic example of such an experience–but it’s easy to forget that St. Paul had already witnessed the first Christian martyrdom.

If he had been a 12th-century Jew escaping a massacre by Christians, he might have responded to such a vision (“I am Jesus, who is persecuting you”) quite differently.

Note: I don’t of course mean that Jesus would say that to a 12th-century Jew, and I’m not ruling out the possibility that a 12th-century Jew might have had a vision that resulted in conversion, along the lines of “I am Jesus, who does not approve of the way my followers are persecuting you” (though in fact I’m not aware of this happening). I’m simply making the point that the context for the vision matter.
