Does everyone typically sing? We too sang America the Beautiful for the recession and there was more singing then usual. I’m not a big fan of the four hymn sandwich to begin with but find it interesting how there is more participation for this song.

Before I became Catholic at my Protestant church they would play the Star Spangled Banner before the services at Memorial, Independence and Veterans Day. Usually before the service the congregation talked rather loudly. But when this song was played they immediately ceased talking and all rose to attention. When the song was over they resumed talking. I found this greatly disturbing but I think the attitude pervades at least American Christianity.
 
one doesn’t need to be “anti- military” to think that singing a patriotic song during mass inappropriate.

A point was brought up by a colleague in liturgical music in a forum group I’m in… Most people wouldn’t dare walk out and leave when a patriotic song is being played at the end of mass… but a song praising the trinity-- watch them walk out.

Everybody sings the first verse. Then there is mumbling and shuffling of songbook pages.

Not me though. I make up my own words. It’s like musical madlibs.

Yup! Though even some trinity songs are not liturgical. And in 3…2…1…
Someone will point out the recessional is not part of the liturgy…

Our parish has a hankering for Christian Rock. I have no problem walking out on the theologically shallow pop Christian trash usually played.
 
Yesterday our parish sang America the Beautiful as the recessional. Same for Memorial Day.

And to be honest, though I’m “old-school” when it comes to music, I’ll take Christian rock or CCM over some of the confections at our parish, where they take common prayers and fit them to songs such as “Hasta Manana” by ABBA, “Sexy Eyes” by some disco artist I can’t even remember, and “Go West” by Pet Shop Boys. 😛

You’re at Mass, not the movies.
Don’t disrespect the liturgy that you claim to love.
Your heart is your offering, as it is for the others who offer theirs.
Ranking those hearts does not elevate the liturgy you attend.

I don’t know Clare, it is miserable to attend mass somewhere where the music is terrible and every week you are miserable because of it, and nothing is ever going to change it. I have lived with it for 20 years with occasional moments of happiness.

Like yesterday when everyone was singing. Normally it is not that many people.

Well, tell me about it.
But I go for Eucharist and because it’s the ONE true Church.
That tends to put everything in perspective.
You enjoy the patriotic singing. He’s complaining about the patriotic singing. 🤷

But I’ll bet everyone on this thread received yesterday.
 
After Mass we sang The Battle Hymn of the Republic. This is consistent with the music selected at our parish around patriotic holidays.
