Does everyone typically sing? We too sang America the Beautiful for the recession and there was more singing then usual. I’m not a big fan of the four hymn sandwich to begin with but find it interesting how there is more participation for this song.As our recessional, we sang 2 verses of America the Beautiful, followed by God Bless America. Everyone was singing! It gave me chills.
Before I became Catholic at my Protestant church they would play the Star Spangled Banner before the services at Memorial, Independence and Veterans Day. Usually before the service the congregation talked rather loudly. But when this song was played they immediately ceased talking and all rose to attention. When the song was over they resumed talking. I found this greatly disturbing but I think the attitude pervades at least American Christianity.
