On the news, I saw someone who was born without the ability to walk, and had to get an amputation on her leg. Things like this happen all the time. Why, you ask? Because God ‘has a plan’. So, basically, he knew and made this happen the whole time, and we really don’t have free will. He doesn’t answer prayers. He just lets things happen. I’m inclined to believe that God just might not be real.

So you aren’t choosing what you want to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner? You certainly have free will.
There can’t simply be ‘free will’ if there is a God who knows everything that will happen, and already has a ‘plan’. Sure, we’re doing the things, but God (if real) set it all up, so if we even have free will, it is limited. I can’t just ‘ask’ for God to, say prove he exists, because he does whatever he wants to do and, as I said ‘Has a plan’. Even the possibility of there being a ‘future’ as is described with God would mean we don’t truly have free will. God already knows what we’ll do for all eternity.

God has a plan that includes free will on our part. Please believe me.

God has a plan that includes our free will. If we do our own thing and ignore God’s commands (his holy will) and do not cooperate with him and his plan or with his graces, then we end up going to hell by our own free will; if we faithfully cooperate with his plan for us and with his will and his graces, then we, by our own free will, go to heaven. God bless you.

I can tell you this for sure:

His plan does not include you giving up in despair, you (or any of us, not you specifically) not helping the disabled as much as we can, or us not seeing the beauty in things that are less than what society perceives as good, perfect, just, or viable.

His plan is for us to respond. But not to turn from Him. To be guided by Him through this life, and back to Him in the next.
Life is a test and a trial. But the passing grade is beyond what we can imagine.
Bliss.

Knowing something is going to happen doesn’t change free will because you can still choose.

The situation that happened didn’t happen simply because God “had a plan.”
It happened because we live in a fallen world with mortal bodies.
I cannot speak on God’s behalf of why He lets some things happen, but I know that God has overcome the world.

Now on the topic of free will, you must understand that by free will Adam and Eve both chose to partake in sin. If there was not free will, why would God allow it to happen? Free will must exist because from free will comes the most genuine type of love. God chose to send his son and God let Jesus die on the cross. How could a father bear to watch his only child (absolutely perfect) die for a bunch of people who didn’t deserve it? That is agape.

Well stated.

God’s plan for all of us is to glorify Him and get to Heaven. God’s plan is that all men be saved through Jesus Christ’s sacrifice. God’s plan is to reveal Himself progressively throughout history and entrust His authority to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

Why have humans strayed from this illustrious plan? What could account for God’s best efforts seemingly gone awry? The fact that we were given free will. God gave us this gift so that we could choose to love him and serve him. Free will increases our own love for God because we know we are not being forced, we are not automatons or slaves. We are His children and we have been shown the plan, and now we must make the choice.

It is only in disbelieving that God is there, in choosing to blind oneself to Truth, and deciding to follow the broad path to Hell that we will condemn ourselves. Is that what you really want as a Catholic? You have been offered the fullness of grace and mercy. Don’t throw it away just because you feel wounded or you have suffered.

Our suffering unites us in a special way with Christ’s Passion and Death. As Christians we can offer it up and make it redemptive. Suffering can work in our lives to bring about good. That is why suffering is truly part of God’s plan. Because if we are not deprived of rich food, we will never truly know its value. If we are not poor, we cannot enjoy being rich. If we are not alone, we will never fully appreciate being truly loved.

:hmmm: I think you may be misunderstanding the phrase “God has a plan.”

God does have a plan, a plan of salvation. As the prophet Jeremiah stated:
11 For I know well the plans I have in mind for you—says the LORD—plans for your welfare and not for woe, so as to give you a future of hope.
12 When you call me, and come and pray to me, I will listen to you.f
13 When you look for me, you will find me. Yes, when you seek me with all your heart,
14 I will let you find me—says the LORD—and I will change your lot; I will gather you together from all the nations and all the places to which I have banished you—oracle of the LORD—and bring you back to the place from which I have exiled you.
His plan for us is for our eternal happiness with Him. And when we seek Him with all our heart, He changes our lot from eternal death to eternal life.

The “plan” that you are talking of, when someone gets injured or we lose a loved one, for example, is a way of saying that God is with us in these moments; that we can be comforted knowing that “all things work together for the good, for those who love God and are called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28). It does mean that a terrorist of a deity sat on his throne and planned all the horrible things he will do to us.

I had a rather bad accident 4 years ago that mangled my left hand – lost my index finger, crippled my pinkie, etc. As a musician (piano, guitar, flute, harp) this was crushing!! In that moment, I had a small army of friends, family, and total strangers praying for me. My heart was miraculously calm through the long recovery and adaptation.

And I was encouraged to know that God does indeed have a plan for me now, a plan that includes have a lifetime of deformity (small as it is), etc. In other words, He knew that this injury would come in my lifetime; but it came as a result of both original sin (through which all suffering entered the world) and through a lifetime of choices that led to me using the table saw that day.

Did God PLAN my accident? No way. Did He ALLOW it – absolutely.

And what is His plan now for me, a musician, with a mangled hand? Beats me 🤷

But He has allowed me to keep much of my musical abilities, including playing the organ at mass! (Lord, help us all!) AND my school suddenly has become a magnet school for children with hand deformities! – fused fingers at birth, missing fingers, extra fingers, partial amputations!!! And there I am displaying my weird old hand without hesitation as I point to the board, etc. And there I am playing guitar with my students, and playing the piano while they sing… and the precious little ones with hand problems see that they don’t need to hide their deformities, nor are they necessarily limited in their abilities. Now that is a grace of God! And a part of His plan.

His plan doesn’t limit me in the sense that I am being controlled. Rather, His plan puts limits on me the way gravity, or the laws of physics “control” me. That is, I can work with His plan for my eternal happiness, or I can work against His plan and end up in eternal death (kind of like working against gravity and jumping off a 10 story building insisting that I won’t be limited by somebody else’s law).

And prayer does change things. It changes us, first of all, by placing our focus on our reliance on God. And God does respond to our prayers – think of our Blessed Mother bringing her concerns to Jesus at the wedding at Cana. The good things are part of God’s plan as well!

I fear I’m making a mess with words here… But my point is that God does have a plan, and it is eternal in scope – all things in this life, good and bad, giving us opportunity to grow in faith and receive His gift of eternal life.

God bless you!

You are talking about the Problem of Evil, one of the main problems in philosophy of religion. The Asian religions are all built around this problem.

In Christianity it is called Theodicy. I recently watched a very good debate on that topic between two sharp minds: Bart Ehrman and Dinesh D’Souza

It’s worth watching and will answer a lot of your questions. Dinesh defends the Christian view and he does an excellent job. Bart Ehrman is an expert in New Testament studies. He used to be a fundamentalist Protestant, but is now an agnostic. He also has a very good insight into the problem. The question of free will comes in a lot.

hhmmmm…
In the Gospel there was a man born blind. Jesus was asked if this was because of the mans sin or the sin of his parents. Jesus replied that it was neither his sin or his parents. Rather it was so that God’s glory could be shown through him.
So let’s compare this idea to the example you provide…

God “let” this person be born into a loving family. Hegave some other people the talents and determination to become doctors and nurses so they could perform the necessary surgery(s).
Others have the talent and skill to make prosthetics and various other implements to aid mobility.
The person who cannot walk, can still live, laugh, love and pray. They can live a full life and fulfill their potential. They can give much and receive much.

How many people were able to show love and caring because this one person was born without the ability to walk?
How many more will be blessed by knowing this person?

Let’s not sell God short in these matters.

Peace
James

Well Nano, I’ve seen some absolutely horrible and devastating things happen to people that just blow my mind, but what really throws my whole universe into a churning vortex is seeing those same people rise like a phoenix from the flames to become better and even **happier **than they were before the ginormous tragedy that struck them down. Fluke of nature?? I say: no. It’s a miracle of God’s Grace.

*“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, says the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

I don’t get how anyone can have free will if everything that God wills goes.

I don’t get how anyone can have free will if everything that God wills goes.
Well - I am free to cooperate or not cooperate with what God wills. Whichever I choose - goes - so…
This constitutes a freedom of my will…therefore I have free will.

Does this help?

Peace

I don’t know if it is accurate to say that the world goes exactly as God wills. Correct me if I am wrong, Catholics, but the world has many aspects that are not according to the will of God, but everything that happens in the world is allowed by God in his omnipotence and omniscience. Therefore it can be said that human will can trump God’s will, if only for fleeting moments, and we are free to disobey and act contrary to His will and even send ourselves to Hell if we decide to do so.

I think what you’re touching on is the subject of predestination, which is a hot-button topic across sects of Christianity. I don’t know too much on this subject. But God has not set us up as automatons or slaves. He knows the paths of our lives and our destinies, they are mapped out in detail, but He is not up there dictating our every move. Take comfort that you are in control of yourself. But at the same time you must remember that God is Lord of the world, and eventually we will all be called to account for our actions. Be prepared for death and judgement, because it is coming as surely as your taxes will be due.

There used to be an old saying that was popular in the mid 80s…" God dont make no junk", I remember seeing posters of this around the catholic school I attended thru middle school, now I realize this was an attempt to make kids feel better about themselves, no matter what kind of problems, disabilities, they may be dealing with, but as Ive gotten older, I almost never hear or see this saying anymore, and some of things Ive seen babies being born with, I do have to wonder what role God is actually playing in each and everyones individual birth…it does make one start to wonder if he literally must breath life into each and every fetus that is born (when seeing some of the problems they are either born with, or the lives they are being born into), it almost seems more like a mass production line versus a really special thing taking place.

Im not sure where I stand on free will either, since there is an obvious ‘wrong’ choice out there…if a person chooses to live a good life, help others, do good deeds, and generally be the best person they can, BUT choose not to be religious or have God in their lives, if the bible is correct, those people end up in horrible places for all eternity for ONE WRONG choice…now, where is their free will? They did all they could to be a good and decent person, but used their free will and simply decided they did not want God in their lives…IMO, thats perfectly fine, as long as they are a good person and not infringing on others rights or harming anyone, but God does not see it that way, and instead thinks that person deserves TERRIBLE eternal torture for not including him in their lives…??? Im sorry, but that is NOT TRUE free will, that is you have 2 choices, but if you dont pick the ‘right path’, you will be punished for it.

Plus, God is all powerful, he created heaven for those deserving of it and those who wish to spend eternity in the presence of God, he also created hell, really for the demons and satan, their place of torment, but human souls go there as well, why only 2 destinations? Why could not God create a 3rd place for good people, who choose not to include God in their lives, but who were not hateful, evil satan worshipping people? Why should these types of people have to suffer some of the utterly horrible things that are said to happen in hell…being ripped apart by demons, and feeling this bodily pain, gnashing of teeth from the extreme pain and suffering??? Why are they being tortured…for their ‘wrong choice’? even though they were good and decent people their entire lives?..all I can say is WOW, and if this is actually true, then I can understand why some people choose to NOT include God in their lives.

I don’t believe in a God who intervenes just because someone is having difficulties. And we pray to God, but sometimes He says “no” or “not now” or “that’s gonna be bad for you.” We all came about through co-mingling of men and women. Sometimes the DNA or the genetics is wonky. It creates new human beings who have challenges. I know a woman who has lived the last 24 years in a hospital bed because she can’t walk at all, and hasn’t since she was a kid. And yet she gets dressed up in sequins and feathers and someone pushes her out into the world in a wheelchair and she enjoys herself!

It’s not just the working parts that make us whole. It’s in all the parts that we find ourselves and decide or not decide to live and be productive and happy.

You are free to believe in any God you choose, or in no God at all. If you believe in God, quit blaming. We’re responsible for ourselves. If you don’t believe, don’t lay the responsibility where it does not belong. If you’re unhappy, change your mind.

If you can’t do that, you may want to be evaluated for depression.
