Hi all,
Has anyone read any books they could reccommend about men and women and how we differ in our need to be loved?
My boyfriend is just starting to believe that men and women really are truly different when it comes to love and fufillment and I wanted some good reading material for us to go over together.
Thanks and God Bless! 🙂

Think our differences in our need to be loved and how we need to be loved (eg some people need to be told that they are loved and others infer this from having love shown to them ie have things done for them) come from differences in other things than whether we are male or female and it could be a good idea for you and your boyfriend to also look at this aspect.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is one way you could do this. By doing the indicator you can find out about your preferences, compare them and find out what this means for how you interact.

The MBTI looks at how an individual usually:
  • interacts with other people ie whether they are introvert (I) or extravert (E)
  • takes in information ie whether they work from the big picture to the detail (N) or from the detail to the larger picture (S)
  • makes decisions ie based on their values (F) or on their principles (T)
  • prefers their life to be ie orderly and planned life (J) or more fluid (P)
No preferences are better than the other and we all use our non-preferences at times eg a “N” will use a map to get somewhere and “J” will go out for the day without it all planned. (However the “N” may not be as good at using a map as an “S” and a “J” may not enjoy an unplaned day out as much as a “P”.)

We tend to find it easier to get on with people who are similar to us - someone the exact opposite is more challenging but just knowing this can help.

You could get a better feeling for the MBTI by looking at the current thread on it in Catholic Answers Forums > Forums > The Water Cooler > Back Fence.

Hope you and your boyfriend enjoy your reading and make interesting discoveries during it.

Thank you both for the suggestions - I think Theology of the Body may be a bit to deep at this stage, but I agree it is a wonderful resource and hope we can read it together some day. I didn’t think about MBTI - that is a good one!
Has anyone ever read “Love and Respect” by Emerson Eggerichs? If so do you recommend it?

Has anyone any thoughts on John Gray’s range of books, eg, “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus”.

These have been very popular on the differences, and upon effective communication between men and women

I’ve stayed away from John Gray’s books as the reviews I have read state that his books express the view that men and women have different ways of looking from things.

I see it more on a continuum and while more men may be at one part of a continuum others will be all along it. The same with women.

In my opinion the view there are male and female ways of looking at and doing things can cause problems for those who do not fit the norn/stereotype. Some people may consider them as not being “real men” or “real women”. Also some people may try and change boys and girls who do not fit the stereotype.

I really think the books are very helpful, its been over ten years since I read them though.

I don’t see what the problem would be then, if you believe it being on a continuum. Just take his ideals and place them on a continuum. Actually I think reading that book, trying to take a critical analysis with that in mind may actually be the best way to read it.

Theology of the Body for Teens, then.

Jason Everett’s work on explaining TOTB.

Cardinal Estevez’ work ignatiusinsight.com/features/estevez_malefemale_aug04.asp

Fulton Sheen’s Three to Get Married.

As you are forming your opinions, it is important that you keep Catholic teaching as your foundation. These others have interesting theories, but, should be read through the light of our Faith.
