God "giving" you sickness versus just random sickness

Lots of the saints say they are at peace when they get sick because it is “from the hand of God” or what “God wants to send” them. They frequently say that God sends them this trial or disease or sickness or hardship. How do we know when sicknesses or trials are “sent” from God or just a random part of life that happens to us?

For me, I pretty much know in hindsight, after seeing the results. I wish I could do better.

But I’m learning that it’s a good thing to treat all difficulties as though sent by God, or at least allowed by God. He would allow you to grow closer to Him through every single thing in your life. There are people who, in their trials, fall away from God. The challenge is to grow in Him in every aspect of your life, good and bad, giving thanks in everything.

I actually feel better if I know the trial is “given” by God versus being “allowed” by God.
Wish I could tell the difference, though!

I’ve found that sometimes my own trials are what my priest would call “silly” pain, stuff that in some way has been caused by my decision. Yet God would use everything, even those things that come from our poor decisions, to draw us closer to Him if we would but allow it.

And even though some is just laws of nature (like if you get the flu, for example) there is some comfort in knowing that God can and would work through that as well.

We shall balance the free decisions (humans, demons) with the providence of God. At the end nothing happens without the approval of God, and without eternal retribution.

Every sickness is given by God!
Because God is almighty everything he allows is also given.

But even the flu (just a law of nature) was taken by the Saints as being “given” from God. Like, God GAVE them the flu.

So if someone with cancer asks if God “gave” them the cancer, you would say “Yes”?

Who has made the law of nature?
Who has made us and that we can get cancer? Only God!
If God did not want that a person is sick than he would keep this person healthy!

So God “wants” us to have cancer/mental illness/terminal illness?

can you cite some examples of saints who said this, with links?
