Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We continue today, with St. Louis de Montfort’s treatise on “True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin”. As we read his writing, which has been read by many over the centuries past, may we hear the Truth God gave this saint to preach to the Church in his day as well as to the Church in our time:
  1. God has established only one enmity - but it is an irreconcilable one - which will last and even go on increasing to the end of time. That enmity is between Mary, His worthy Mother, and the devil, between the children and the servants of the Blessed Virgin and the children and followers of Lucifer.
Thus the most fearful enemy that God has set up against the devil is Mary, His holy Mother. From the time of the earthly paradise, although she existed then only in His mind, He gave her such a hatred for His accursed enemy, such ingenuity in exposing the wickedness of the ancient serpent and such power to defeat, overthrow and crush this proud rebel, that Satan fears her not only more than angels and men but in a certain sense more than God Himself. This does not mean that the anger, hatred and power of God are not infinitely greater than the Blessed Virgin’s, since her attributes are limited. It simply means that Satan, being so proud, suffers infinitely more in being vanquished and punished by a lowly and humble servant of God, for her humility humiliates him more than the power of God. Moreover, God has given Mary such great power over the evil spirits that, as they have often been forced unwillingly to admit through the lips of possessed persons, they fear one of her pleadings for a soul more than the prayers of all the saints, and one of her threats more than all their other torments.
  1. What Lucifer lost by pride Mary won by humility. What Eve ruined and lost by disobedience Mary saved by obedience. By obeying the serpent, Eve ruined her children as well as herself and delivered them up to him. Mary by her perfect fidelity to God saved her children with herself and consecrated them to His divine majesty.
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your Faithful, as you filled the heart of Mary on this earth, with Jesus! Strengthen in us the Supernatural Faith received at our Baptism that we may become like her in our faith to believe as she did, “Nothing is Impossible with God”.
Strengthen in us the Supernatural Hope given us to trust God as Mary trusted, standing at the foot of Jesus’ Cross. Strengthen in us the Supernatural Charity given us that Like Mary we may love God and love one another as Jesus has loved us.

Dear patricius and Stephie,

Thank you both for your “hearts” to let us know you read the words of St. Louis de Montfort today. I hope others have read and pondered the words also.

How very important for us to ponder the Truth in Scripture as Mary did and as St. Louis de Montfort pondered and prayed for the Wisdom to understand God’s Will and to do the Truth he heard. Mary pondered the Old Testament before the New Testament was written down. Mary listened to all Jesus said and did, pondering all in her heart. Mary humbly did God’s Will as she saw Jesus doing His Father’s Will.

By God’s grace may we follow Mary’s example, praying for God’s Grace to become humble like our Mother and completely given to doing His Will, as He reveals it to us through Sacred Scripture, Tradition and the Magisterium of the Church. Let us pray especially to the Holy Spirit to open the ears of our hearts to hear all God speaks to us.

Interesting! In an interview about exorcism, (see link below) exorcist Fr. Pedro Barrajon had this to say about this exact same thing. He states;

No demon ever dares to insult her during an exorcism. Never.

And then the interviewer asks him;

Does he have more respect for Mary than for God himself?

He replied;

Apparently. Otherwise no holds are barred, and everyone is insulted: the priests, everyone present, the bishops, the Pope, even Jesus Christ. But never the Virgin Mary. It’s an enigma.

It makes sense. Mary and Satan are direct opposites. He is the most rebellious, prideful of all creatures and She the most obedient and humble.

Yes! Our Blessed Mother is the most obedient and humble. And not only that, Satan knows that she is from the human plane, and is so full of grace.

Dear Mark,

Thanks for your “heart” letting me know you read and appreciated the words of St. Louis de Montfort. Thanks so much also for your reply and the link you included. I read the entire interview. I encourage others to read it if they did not:

Satan certainly heard God say what we also can hear in Genesis 3:15:
I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers;
They will strike at your head, while you strike at their heel.
Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for all your children. Jesus, we trust in You!

One of my favorite books is St. Bernadette Soubirous: 1844-1879 by Abbe’ Francois Trochu. Here’s an excerpt from the fourth apparition;
On the way back to the Petits-Fosses, Bernadette revealed how at a certain moment the Apparition seemed different from before. Suddenly loud yells, belched from the Gave, had rent the sacred silence of Massabielle. They ‘challenged, crossed, collided with one another, like the clamour of a brawling crowd.’ One voice, more furious than the rest, dominated them all and roared out: ‘Get out of here! . . . Get out of here!’ Bernadette guessed rightly that the threatening curse was by no means addressed merely to her humble self, but was an attack directed beyond her to the Vision of Light standing above the eglantine. The Vision merely glanced in the direction of the rushing stream. This single look, one of sovereign authority, reduced the invisible mob to silence!
Think of that for a moment. Here is the devil himself being completely silenced, totally reduced to zilch by a mere glance in his direction by that August Princess! What immense power Almighty God has bestowed on her…His masterpiece. How truly blessed we are to have her!

Dear Mark,

Thanks again for your reply. St. Bernadette is such a sweet saint – similar in some ways to St. Therese of Lisieux. God gave them both great wisdom in their humility and simplicity.
It seems to me, Bernadette knew by God’s Grace that evil was present and that her beautiful Lady was more powerful than any evil. 🙂
