I found out today that the DRE wants me to teach CCD at 8:30 am on Sundays starting next year. 🙂 I’m very happy to do this!
Looks like i’ll be jumping right into it. 🙂 I’ll call her tomorrow and see about getting some books for me to read. 🙂
Any pointers from our experienced teachers?

be honest, be faithful and be a perfect example of how to love one another as Jesus loves us when you are teaching.

Also, if your diocese has an office of Catechesis with a library of materials…bank on using them in your quest for becoming not just a good teacher but a great one.

With all things, pray, pray and pray some more.

God Bless you! I have been teaching now for 3 years and I came into it in a similar way. I volunteered to assist to get my feet wet, and found out that I was going to be teaching third grade! I love it and have been getting more comfortable all the time. One thing that I have noticed this year is that I will be talking to the students about something that seems to just ‘come up’ and then at mass the next day (we have CCD on Saturdays) there will be a reference to the exact thing we talked about! It’s like the Holy Spirit is guiding me and the kids get the re-inforcement at mass! What grade are you teaching?

I don’t know yet. 🙂 I’ve been busy this week with preparing my 9 yr old son for his 1st communion. 🙂

AWESOME!!! 👍 I love teaching the faith to our youth! It’s such an amazing calling.

We don’t even have CCD here in Britain- the only chance we get for catechesis is in sacramental preparation (very poorly run too, in many parishes). So my advice I suppose is: always remember how fortunate you are to get the chance to evangelise the young! Teach faithfully to the magisterium always, and give the kids joy rather than a sense that it’s just like school!

thank you thank you thank you
to you and to the 3 people who just walked into my office offering to teach next year, all highly qualified, moving here from other cities. oh, and thanks to You, too, Holy Spirit. Plus 2 parishioners who used to teach, and want to do it again, we are looking good. New catechist orientation this Saturday, methodology by grade level next Saturday, then Protecting God’s Children. 7 Secrets of a Successful Catechist and Lesson Planning Workshop in August. Plus a special training on new diocesan guidelines for sacramental prep. I have gone from panic-striken to ecstatic in one week.
