I’ve been pondering over the saying “God is great”, and have come to my own conclusion on it.
On one hand, the statement is true, but, on the other hand, the statement can be false if seen through the wrong lenses.
Philosophically speaking, God is One. There is no other God. And God is good - indeed, He is Goodness itself. So one can certainly say that God is not just good but great. When the Lord created the world, He saw that it was very good; the Bible dose not say He saw it was great but that it was very good. This is because only God is great - only He is the absolute goodness. Every good thing He has created dose not amount to goodness itself, so everything is good, very good, but only God is great.
But “God is great” can be turned into a false statement, a heresy, an exaggeration of the truth, a lie against the Lord. For example, some might say that God is great in that He is above goodness, He is greater than all goodness, He is more than goodness itself - and from this would follow a belief that, because God is above goodness, He cannot be known, and hence, His Will cannot be fathomed. This belief would, of course,alienate God from man and turn Him into a something, an unknown God - which would be going backwords rather than forward, because God has revealed Himself to man, and even the Apostle Paul, when he came to an altar enscribed to “an unknwon god,” explained to the gentiles that the god they worshiped unknowinghly was God Himself, the Creator of all things, who has no equals and has always existed.
