My boss says he has been puzzled by this phrase for years, and I could not give him an adequate response.

Yesterday I heard a talk by Archbishop Fulton Sheen that included this passage in one of the points he was making, but the meaning still illudes me…

Any ideas?

Archbishop Sheen is using the verb “respect” in an archaic sense; in this case to “respect” means to show partiality or bias. You can see the use of this verb in the United States Constitution, First Amendment, prohibiting Congress from making any law “respecting any establishment of religion”, i.e. shall not show favor or official bias towards any religion.

The phrase in question basically means that we are all equal in God’s eyes.

Hi John__,

This is from Romans 2,11. It is a problem of some old translations of the bible. Here is how it is said in two recent translattions :
  1. There is no partiality with God.
  2. God does not show favoritism.
It means we are all equal before God.
