Explain why.

Could we love them so much if they are not? Explain why or why not?

🤷 I’ve never been able to see babies as cute. I don’t think they’re ugly or repulsive, I’ve just never seen them as cute.

Honestly I find most babies neutral. Every once in a while I’ll see one and say “Man, that is a cute baby” but it is not often. And then once in a while I think a baby is quite unattractive. But I do want to point out that this has no bearing on what the person grows up to look like.

I’m sure most parents with a child that looks out of the ordinary love them very much.

I think Bowlby (the psychologist) said that things like a round face, crying, big eyes and smiling were ‘social releasers’ to keep the caregiver close

I have two responses when a new parent introduces me to their baby for the first time.

If the baby is cute I say, “What a cute baby!”

If the baby is anything else I say, “He/She looks just like you!”

haha! That’s funny. I just always stick with the “OH HOW CUTE!”

lol! Also, if someone says “My, your baby is so…alert!” it generally means they don’t think its a cute baby. 😃

Honestly though, babies are adorable to their parents. I think THAT is God’s design to help us as parents to feel attached to them.

Cute does not necessarily means the baby is good looking. My friend recently had a baby who looked, to me, like Baby Sinclair in Dinosaurs. She was all eyes. She was very cute but not what I would call ‘pretty’. She’s growing into her eyes, and has become pretty in the past months.

I’m mom of 3 and grandmother of one. I had 3 cute babies and a cute grandson but as babies there was only one ‘pretty’ or ‘handsome’ one. I’m not saying which one it was.😃

They aren’t cute, it’s your brain wired to find it appealing and so it flips hormonal switches in your head. The brain is wired to like babies because they are the continuation of the species.

If one baby is cute, then all babies are cute, because I think all (at least most) look alike. In my opinion, there is nothing cuter then a two week old kitten or puppy. Being cute is the baby 's way of kepting her/his caregiver around until he/she is big and old enough to take care of him/her self. 🤷👍

Babies are cute so that we will nurture them and care for them.

Adolescents are obnoxious so we will kick them out of the nest.

The perception of obnoxiousness certainly makes the leave-taking much more bearable for both sides, when the time comes.

I also think this is a matter of parental perception, since I know lots of very nice teenagers whose parents consider them obnoxious and difficult. 🤷

(There are also some who actually are anti-social, and difficult to talk to, but they seem to be in the minority.)

Cuteness is definitely in the eye of the beholder, though - I had a friend who had what I thought were the world’s ugliest babies - square heads, small eyes, jutting chins - and he thought they were cute.

It’s interesting.

I watched a show on pbs about dogs. One of their reasons that people love dogs so much is that dogs heads have evolved to look much like babies’ heads.

I know many people who are crazy about dogs, but hate kids, though.

All babies are cute. And they get cuter as one grows older.

I look into their eyes and see God as pure, innocent love.
Babies look like they just stepped out of heaven, pure goodness, like the angels.

Everytime I see one, my thoughts automatically turn to God in praise.
They are wonders.

Just a thought.

My thought is that seeing innocent and defenseless creatures as cute is a sign one posses a moral compass or virtue, as it relates to a desire to protect those who cannot protect themselves. It kind of reminds me of the whole people who are mean to animals (especially cute ones like cats) tend to be mean to people. Perhaps thinking babies are cute or at the very least admiring their innocence and weakness is a sign your a right thinking person?

Actually, this is one of the best definitions of cute I’ve ever seen. A physical appearance that creates that sort of physiological reaction is probably as cute as anything could be.

I think all babies, even the not-so-attractive ones, are almost incredibly cute, because they are a visible sign of God’s gift of creation. We could all be just inanimate, unthinking, soulless matter. But instead we have been given the gift of consciousness and the gift of a soul. We are the incredibly small fraction of the universe that can look around and recognize the wonder of God’s creation. Each new life is a part of that inheritance. Each is a seed of potentiality, another chance for a soul to get it right.

The first time I held my own children and looked in their eyes, it felt like the motion of the universe had stopped for a moment. It’s like no other experience I’ve ever had.

I get choked up all the time when I see new babies. It’s probably embarrassing to be around me.

Me neither. They’re bald, smell bad, are always drooling and snot nosed and do nothing but eat and sleep and whine. You know, just like everyone’s grandpa!

OK, seriously now, I always thought babies as cute. They just look too cute with their innocence.

The only parts of our body that don’t grow are our eyeballs. Your eyes at birth are the same size as they are when you are an adult, which is why babies have such big adorable eyes, and part of why they look so cute. We place a lot of value on looking at other people’s eyes because we value sight, but also because they are so important to non-vocal communication - as the saying goes, the eyes are the mirror of the soul.

I don’t know if other species also maintain the size of the eyeball throughout life, or if it is true to the same extent. If so, that could have been part of God’s plan to help us bond with our children, and all children as a group, and to help protect babies - it is harder to harm someone you find cute. It could also be true of primates as a whole (chimp and orangutan babies also have big eyes), but I suspect that if God used the natural process of selection to gradually create and shape the human form before endowing it with a soul, then our closest relatives will of course share many of our characteristics.
