Mark 12:26-27 (King James Version)
26And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?
27He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err.
Last night, when you went to bed you most likely went to sleep. Did you cease to exist? no Were you alive? yes A person in a comma is not dragged out to the grave yard and planted 8 feet under because they are still alive.
The Sadducees like modern atheists believed that when you die, you cease to exist. They also deny the physical ressurrection of the body, and deny that angels and demons exist too. It was this doctrines that Jesus was addressing. The idea of dead in verse 27, was that of being non-existent, not that of simply being asleep.
Well, those whom believe in soul sleep do believe that one is alive, just sleeping or in a comma like state of being. They do not deny that one exists, nor do they deny that one is alive.
Jesus in this text and its parallels did not address if people in the grave were asleep or awake.
We who believe that they were awake would have to appeal to texts like Luke 16 and Rev 6 to demonstrate that people in heaven are in fact awake.
