Gottle of Geer posted - ## The first 39 books are & were Jewish - Christians have them only because, most Christians being Gentiles, the Gentiles have been grafted into the stock of the vine that is Israel. ## If the Christian Church were of purely human origin, that would be true. It is not - so it’s not. The Church is a mystery, one upheld by the grace of Christ, before it is anything else - it is impossible to give a fair account of it if this is forgotten. ## How is this passage:
17 Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
18 And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
19 I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
Are you not a Catholic? If so, you know that Catholicism is a Judao-Christian religion. Jesus is God, therefore, the Old Testament and the New Testament points to and is about Jesus…All of it!
The entire Bible, in one way or another, points towards Jesus . Why do you the think that verses from the Old Testament, the Psalms, the New Testament and the Gospels are read together during every Catholic Mass? It is done because All of it, the entire Bible, points to Jesus. (direct or indirect - Christology and Biblical Typology).
The focal point of Catholicism is Jesus Christ!
“Only in the light of Easter, in the light of the Holy Spirit, did believers gradually come to understand that Moses and the prophets had in fact spoken of Jesus,”
- Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI) 1995 Gospel-Catechesis-Catechism (page 52-53)
One, who does not believe that the Bible is a “Catholic Book” is at odds with Christian history and at odds with the history of the formation of the Bible and he doesn’t believe that Catholicism represents the Full Deposit of Faith.
One would also have to reject the authority given by Jesus Christ (God) to His (Catholic) Church here on earth and the fact that the Roman Catholic Church is guided, infallibly by the Holy Spirit.
The Catholic Church and Catholic Popes were here well before the Bible, and the formation of the Bible occurred well before any “Protestant” denomination; this is a historical fact!
posted - …incompatible with Protestantism ? If the objections were valid, Protestantism would have no answers for it. Since the objections are not a problem for Protestants, but only for Catholics, they are nothing. There is nothing even to hint that Rome is involved, even remotely.
As for the “Christian beliefs” - it is tempting to reply in kind. If we excuse the evils in Catholicism by saying "we are only human, so we sin, so there are scandals in Catholicism - but this does not affect the Church " (which is a common defence of the CC on these forums); then why cannot the same defence be as effective for Protestantism ?
“My Church” is not given any particular form of government. Nor does the passage express a Catholic ecclesiology, just as it does not formally reject it. So this passage is no good as an argument against an ecclesiology which considers thousands of Churches to be parts within the one & universal Church of Christ.
The “kingdom of God” is God Himself…The (Catholic) Church is the “kingdom of God on earth”.
“It futher becomes clear that the people of God, the Church as the human protagonist of salvation history, is present in the very act of faith.”
- Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI) 1995 Gospel-Catechesis-Catechism (page 28)
“The intrinsic unity of faith is not a mulitude of proprositions”.
I believe that you are confusing the commonality all Christians share through proper Baptism and very specific, articulated, different and at times, anti-Catholic beliefs and doctrines, which have been and continue to be heretical.
You are also confusing the behavior of persons who are “members” of a denomination that are acting outside the doctrines and beliefs of that particular denomination with the denomination itself, which, in the case of the Roman Catholic Church, is Infallible. I hope this helps.
Happy Easter Michael
