We are expecting our 3rd child and are undergoing some rather annoying issues within our family (both sides) and may have a problem in finding a suitable godparent.
Our main question is this:
What exactly is the godparent role? There is no legal aspect, right? We do not yet have a will for this reason. We have NO clue who our children will go to if something happens to us. His parents are WONDERFUL with the kids, but have stated they will be “good Christian influence, but not Catholic ones.” My father still attends Mass regularly, but my mother does not. Can I just ask him to be the godparent? I’m sure that will release a mega-wrath from my mother, but maybe she needs that to understand this is important? But, at the same time. I am 1 of 6 kids - 4 of which have yet to reach college - let alone graduate from high school. So I would not want to leave the kids with them either…and the fact that my mother is certainly NO LONGER a Catholic or generic Christian influence.
We need to know what to do about this issue. We know we need godparents, but we don’t even know what their true roles are.
Thank you!!
