By Peter J. Smith DENVER, Colorado, June 24, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Episcopal Church has to clarify God’s official position on abortion – at least so says a priestess of the church, who claims that a proposed rite for post-abortive women conflicts with church theology and…

I don’t think I would be wanting to be standing next to her in a rainstorm. 🙂

Never cease to be amazed…😦
To be fair, we do know pro-life Anglicans/Episcopalians who share our belief in the sacredness of human life.By & large they are separating themselves from the mainline Episcopal Church, though.

The LifeSite headline is misleading.

Rev. Nina Churchman did not say that God rejoices over abortion. What she wrote was “God, unlike what the liturgy states, also rejoices that women facing unplanned pregnancies have the freedom to carefully choose the best option - birth, adoption or abortion - for themselves and their families.”

The distinction between those two statements is significant.

The other correction which is needed, is to note that The Episcopal Church does not refer to its female priests as “priestess.” To call her that is both unwarranted and insulting. I think it is also un-Christian.

There is no distinction… she is saying God is rejoincing even if they choose to kill thier kid.

She shouldnt be preaching God’s word if she is promurder.

the title of the thread is not exactly how she worded it, but i still disagree with what she is saying. what makes her think that God is rejoicing that women have the choice to abort their babies? maybe she is looking at it from a perspective that i don’t see.

she is another one of the liberals who just hate it when sin and guilt get in the way. we are supposed to feel good about everything.

if we do wrong, we need to admit our sin and then we begin to heal. i don’t see how anyone could have an abortion and not experience some kind of guilt. you would have to be detached from yourself and reality i would think.

the next thing we know there will be no such thing as sin. looking back over history,
it seems some cultures have already tried that and it didn’t work too well when everyone is out for their own pleasure.

she is noble to feel compassion for these women who have had to make these choices and live with the consequences, but these women probably feel as though they have committed a sin that has separated them from God and they need help in reconciliation.
by denying they have sinned and denying they have separated themselves from God, will not help them in the healing process i don’ think.

this is just my opinion.

what makes her think that God is rejoicing that women have the choice to abort their babies?
Oh, I agree its an extreme statement which is probably theologically shaky. Rev. Churchman is angry that The Episcopal Church would consider saying that abortion is sinful. I suspect she said used the word “rejoice” primarily because it was used in the proposed “Rite of Repentance and Reconciliation for an Abortion." This rite will be considered for adoption during the General Convention of the Episcopal Church will be meeting in Anaheim, California from July 8 - 17.

It will be interesting to see how much support (and opposition) there is in the Episcopal Church towards this new proposed rite of healing. I suspect Rev. Churchman is not alone in her feelings.

yes, i remembered reading that they were proposing a rite of healing which i have no problem with. i think many women must be left somewhat psychologically harmed after having an abortion. after an abortion, it is too late to do anything for the baby, but i think that women should have some kind of follow up counseling to see how they are coping with the decision and perhaps even after giving up a baby for adoption. they are both traumatic events which could lead to self destructive behavior on the part of the woman if she hasn’t dealt with it well. whether the baby is aborted or given up for adoption, it is out of control of the mother and she needs to learn to deal with herself and the consequences. many times i think that women think that aborting the pregnancy or giving the baby up for adoption solves the problem, but you cannot deny something that had already started. the mother must feel a loss after being pregnant and either terminating the pregnancy or carrying it to full term and then giving it up for adoption. they cannot deny that there was something that was part of them that is no longer there. in the family i grew up in, both scenarios took place among my sister and cousin and they were never again the same. they would deny it, but it was very obvious that they both needed counseling and they never got it and they really needed healing.
sorry, i guess i got off track. i see nothing wrong with this rite of healing after an abortion or giving a baby up for adoption so it will be interesting to see what the convention decides.
it will also be interesting to see what other statements are made by other female priests at the convention on this topic.

I think you made good points as to why the rite of healing is a good idea. I’m not an Episcopalian, so my views aren’t important (or informed), but why not allow the rite to exist for those who want it? Its not as if the rite will be mandatory.

i guess at the convention they will be concerned about the wording or liturgy of the rite.
no, the rite would definitely only apply to certain people - not be mandatory.
so i hope they allow the rite to exist once they can agree on the wording - referring to sin and guilt or not referring to it.

When does God rejoice that one of his children is dehumanized out of existence?

Even more reason not to have women’s ordination.

LOL! That article was hilarious! Made me roll over laughing!

Wait, it’s not a comedy? She was serious? Oh.

God help her.

Abortion is never “the best option.” Ever.

The distinction is akin to the distinction between “God rejoices in suicide” and “When I am depressed, God rejoices when I have the choice between a phone, anti-depressants, and a loaded gun at my bedside.”

Yes, it is different, but the distinction is in degree, not in kind.

As an aside, it is a problem when clergy make their quarrels with the liturgy public. Having said that, that particular problem is an Episcopal problem, not mine.

This is true, too. It is insulting to use terminology different from that of another religion for the purpose of discounting the position they have created, which this does.

Besides, it wouldn’t be one bit better if a male Episcopal priest had written it. It is still outrageously clueless.

Abortion of an unwanted child is still murder…

Unrepentant murderers that die in their sin burn in hell for eternity… no exceptions.

when you’re right, you’re right. Let us pray for all of the murdered children, and for the parents who murdered them.
