I was approached by a Protestant apologist today and he started telling me about there being not only God the Father, but God the Mother as well. We need to know about both to have eternal life, because if we don’t know about the Mother, we only know about who we think is god, but not the “real” god which is both the Mother and Father

-He claimed that in Genesis and elsewhere God always used “us”, and “we” when speaking about Himself.

-He used the story of Abraham as being proof. Abraham represents God the Father, giving his son Isaac (who represents Christ) up. Abraham had 2 wives, Hagar and Sarah. Hagar in Galatians 4:21-31 is said to be a slave, while Sarah is the “free woman”. And Gal. 4:30-31 states “the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.” 31 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.”

Therefore, since Isaac holds the inheritance of Heaven and Ismael doesn’t because of their mothers, we must also be in line with God the Mother as well to gain eternal life. We cannot be saved unless we properly worship God the Mother.

I’ve never heard this before. Could somebody clarify/help me?

*This was confusing when the apologist explained it to me, and will be more confusing trying to explain to it you all. If you’d like me to explain it better, just ask!

I will take a stab as a Methodist who will be going through RCIA in the fall so take it for what is is worth:) In Mass today the Deacon spoke of the Us in Genesis referring to God as a triune being or the Trinity so that covers that:) The rest of it sounds like the kind of New Age gobbledygook which has me running from Mainstream Protestanism after being a life long Methodist and Bible believing Christian:) In the 90’s I sat through a Sunday School class in my church where we were presented with what we thought about a new trend of worshipping God as a woman who was called Sophia or wisdom. I had no thoughts of swimming the Tiber then despite being married to a cradle Catholic but that should have been my first clue how far from Sacred Scripture we had fallen as a denomination:)

He was talking about the rest of the trinity. It’s actually one of the most striking evidence for Christianity (especially Trinitarian Christianity) in the Old Testament.

Everything else the guy you talked to mentions is just full of self-made metaphors and interpretations.

He might be a Mormon. I think they believe in a sort of mother in Heaven (but not Mary  🤷 )

He was non denominational. The thing that really bothers me is that I didn’t know how to respond to it. I’d never heard that before so how could I argue?

It is heresy.

God is 3 persons - the Father, the Son, and the Holy spirit.

The mother of God is also our Mother, but she is not God. We love her, we have devotions to her, and we pray to her, but we don’t worship her. It is good to have devotions to her, because she will always lead us to Him.

She contained that which cannot be contained. The new ark of the covenent. Pure and perfect like a tabernacle of the finest gold.

Of course God refers to himself in the plural. Everybody knows the line “Let us make man in our image”. But when God reveals his name to Moses, he calls himself “I am who am”, not “we are who are”. So this guy is off on the wrong foot. But as for the rest, it is the teaching of The World Mission Society Church of God, which you can google for yourself.

He gave me his email, so I feel obliged to write him and tell him why I think he’s wrong. Can anybody give me a few pointers?
Yes. Have no further contact with him.

But since you’re still in college, feel free to keep it up because it can be a fun and interesting learning experience for you, not only as an introduction to a different way of thinking, but also as an introduction to how these organizations operate and what they do to people, especially college students.

Brace yourself for some powerful techniques.

If you do keep in contact with him, make sure all of your friends know about what’s going on and what you are doing and keep a written diary of everything. Do not, under any circumstances, go anywhere with him or do anything at his invitation unless you have a second person with you at all times who has no connection with the organization. Get in the habit of saying, “Can my friend come along?”

The reason I’m recommending these self-protection strategies is because it’s easy for a solitary person to be taken in and manipulated, and maintaining strong connections with others who are uninvolved can keep you on the level. Don’t underestimate the power of a third party exclaiming in disbelief, “They did what? They tried to baptize you? Are you *kidding *me?”

Yes…easily. God is three persons, not four. One God,but three distinct persons ALL divine. Tell him to look up the early church councils and read what heresies were attacked and why? Good luck

Well, Christ himself never referred to a mother only the Father and the Holy Spirit. The Father never mentioned a wife and only promised a messiah. The Holy Spirit hasn’t revealed anything of a “God the Mother” until this man’s church decided on it. We can also see that the apostles (people who are probably in Heaven, never spoke of God the Mother meaning they most likely didn’t believe in it. If you do choose to contact him please treat him with kindness and the love of God and realize that you probably wont convince him of the fallacy present in these beliefs.

Our non-Denominational brother has several things going on here, foremost of which is a lack of understanding of the context under which Paul was speaking. Another prroblem he as is that he is taking verses 30 and 31 completely out of the context of the surrounding verses.

Now this is an allegory. These women represent two covenants. 👍 One was from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; this is Hagar. Hagar represents Sinai, a mountain in Arabia; it corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery along with her children. But the Jerusalem above is freeborn, and she is our mother. For it is written: “Rejoice, you barren one who bore no children; break forth and shout, you who were not in labor; for more numerous are the children of the deserted one than of her who has a husband.” Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of the promise. But just as then the child of the flesh persecuted the child of the spirit, it is the same now. But what does the scripture say? “Drive out the slave woman and her son! For the son of the slave woman shall not share the inheritance with the son” of the freeborn. Therefore, brothers, we are children not of the slave woman but of the freeborn woman. (Galatians 4:24-31)

In verse 24, Paul clearly states, “Now this is allegory.” He is in no way referencing a literal maternal god, but instead goes on to explain that Hagar represents the Jews under slavery to the mosaic law. Under the mosaic law, slaves did not inherit property; one had to be free to be an heir. Paul wrote Galatians to a group of pagan converts to Christianity who were being pressured by Jewish converts to obey the mosaic law in addition to the precepts of their Christian faith. Paul was addressing slavery to the mosaic law and freedom from the law through the grace of Jesus Christ. He uses the Old Testament scriptures, of which he was a scholar, to illustrate to the Galatians how they were to drive out slavery to the mosaic law (allegorically Hagar) and live as free men who are destined to inherit the promises of Christ (allegorically Sarah). Our non-denominational Brother simply does not understand the social context under which Paul wrote his letter to the Galatians, nor the historical context of how slavery, freedom and inheritance worked in the ancient world. He also fails to see that Paul cleary says “This is allegory.” It’s classic.

The “Us” and “We” references go back to the very first book of Genesis. After creating night and day, heavens and earth, the seas and all the animials, God creates man. And the very first thing God tells us about man - the very first thing God tells us about ourselves in the whole Bible - is that we are created as man and woman, in God’s image.

Then God said: "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and the cattle, and over all the wild animals and all the creatures that crawl on the ground." God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:26-27)

This message is so profound that God placed it in the 26th and 27th verse of a book with over 35,000 verses. Man and woman, male and female, are made in “Our” image, the image of the Triune God, the Trinity.

God the Father loves God the Son. God the Son loves God the Father. The Father and Son are totally committed to each other, in a permanent and inseperable relationship of complete self-sacrificing love, and the Holy Spirit is the product of that love. Man and woman are created in the image of the Trinity. Husband and wife, totally committed to each other in a permanent and inseperable relationship, holding nothing back, completely sacrificing their own needs and desires for the health, safety, wellbeing and happiness of the other, is a mirror of the way in which God the Father and God the Son love each other within the Trinity. And the way in which the Holy Spirit is a product of the love between God the Father and God the Son is the way in which children are a product of totally commited and self sacrificial love betwen husband and wife.

The nuclear family - husband, wife and children - was designed by God to mirror the innermost workings of the Trinity. That message was so important to God that he told it to us in the first few sentances of the Bible and the whole rest of the Bible depends the first chapter.

Our non-denominationalist is working toward a correct understanding but he falls short and misses the mark. Our earthly spousal relationships are a way in which God reveals to us the nature of love within the Trinity, and more than that, is a way in which God allows us to experience trinitarian love in our every day lives, but that does not refer to a literal God the Father and God the Mother. Our earthly spousal relationships are shadows of the real relationship of pure love within the Trinity, which Paul nails in the closing verse of 2 Corinthians…

The grace of the **Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God **and the fellowship of the **Holy Spirit **be with you all. (1 Corinthians 13:13)

God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. That’s it. The role of Mother is filled by Mary but I’ll leave that to someone else or another thread.

Sounds to me like the doctrine of demons!!!

You want a mother figure? The Theotokos is the only mother figure you will find in heaven. The Immaculate, perpetual virgin, Mother of God.

The apologist, the other person and whoever else is telling you about [god the mother] is telling you about the doctrine of demons.

Wake up people!!

This youngman has wrongly interpreted the bible. The story of Abraham and Isaac is a real fact that isnt opened to any other interpretation. This is a real story that shows us Abraham´s faith, love, obedience and fear for the Lord. AND it happened!!..nowhere on that Book states that Sarah --nor Hagar – were queens, or goddesses. The line that descends from Hagar and Ismael are the islamic nations (muslims), for God promised Hagar her son would be the chief of a great nation as well. Now, let´s not forget this is the Old Testament, where pagans or descendants of other tribes were not welcome into Heaven…but when Our Lord Jesuschrist came he changed all that and said that "Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven that is my brother, my sister and my mother " (Matt 12:50, New Testament)… so anyone who sees the light (regardless of creed and nationality) ackowledges the Catholic church as the one and only, and breaks free from the chains of sin, ignorance and lukewarmth (which is the real slavery) becomes one of God´s children.

So as to that youngmans statement tell him he is wrong and we cannot be saved unless we do the will of the Father, unless we don´t love and respect one another, follow the commandments of Our Lord, and love (not worship) Mary like our holy Mother. Hope this helps. Cheers

Godbless you

It isn’t 100% clear what he said, but from the opening post, he seems to be saying that we have to know about–and worship–the Mother to have eternal life. This means that anyone who doesn’t believe in “the Mother” is not in heaven, nor saved. This would mean that from the time of Christ, Christians of all stripes were not saved, except those very few ones of the most recent years who speak of the Father as the Mother as well. And too few–or more probably none–of those reading this post will be saved or have etenal life. This would mean too that the saints, including St. Francis, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Padre Pio–let alone someone like Pope John Paul II–were not saved. And if he said this, his words mean that our parents and grandparents, our aunts and uncles, and our brothers and sisters who have already died were not saved. Such teaching must be an offense to God.
