God the Mother?

Hello all,

I’m currently auditing a class on Church history and some regulars in the program were asked to have opening prayer each week. Last week the woman doing the prayer which was quite elaborate said some things at the end like, “god the father, god the defender, god the potter, god the mother?”. What’s up with the mother part? It just sounded really strange to me???
 
Jesus taught us to pray Our Father, Who art in heaven.
I’ll got with what He said.
 
Yes, it can sounds strange. It can also set off alarm bells. However here are many feminine images of God in the Old Testament, and both women and men are made in the image and likeness of God. In many ways God the Mother is God the creator, and the Holy Spirit.

However, the woman saying this prayer probably thinks that God the Father is a dated, misogynistic, patriarchal image that needs to be discarded.

Was the class at a Catholic school? If so then you are dealing with someone who sees religion as a means to a political end.

The only reason we call God our Father is because Jesus told us to do that. God has told us that his relationship to us is like that of a father. It is absurd for us (humans) to try and change the relationship to that of mother and child.

the only feminine qualities of God are wisdom, and maybe a couple of other things.

But you never here anywhere in the Bible someone call God “God the Mother” that actually could be a offense against the first person of the trinity, because Christ made it clear and the Church made it very clear that the first person of the trinity is a Father, and is called Father. The second is called Son, the Third Holy Spirit, there is no Mother in the trinity. Now if she said pray for Holy Mother Church that would be perfectly ok :).

I’m hoping you misheard, and what was said was something to the effect of “God, by the intercession of His Blessed Mother, Mary ever-Virgin…”

Otherwise it was a rather heterodox “prayer”, to say the least, since God is Our Father.

I may be mistaken but if people give feminine qualities to God it would be because of Wisdom. But you could be exactly correct, I don’t know but a couple of words in greek.

Then that is extremely heterodox and I wouldn’t associate myself with her class anymore if I were you. If there is an ecclesiastic in the hierarchy above her, like a priest or bishop, you should certainly go there.

Good question but as far as the OP its pretty clear atleast to me that Jesus and non of the prophets or apostles Called God Mohter, and Jesus himself called God Father. So we shouldn’t call God Father. Even though its not as bad we should be careful about calling God by names he hasn’t told us to call him by or told us not to call him by. Its fine to say God you are a protector of people and so on and so forth But don’t call God the protector. That may be a stretch but I think its safe to stick to calling God Jesus, God the Father, Holy Spirit. Lamb of God. Also don’t ever call God yahweh (I probably shouldn’t have typed it) but that is off topic kinda.

Deus Mater doesn’t work very well in the Latin. 🙂

And dea is a false pagan god.
 
Actually it’s a class sponsored by the diocese for lay ministry. I’m not in the program but auditing the class bc I thought it would be good to take. The instructor is very good and I see him try to steer the conversation back on track but some people just believe what they do and nothing one can say will change it. There is another in the class who talks about how her church is not dependent on a priest at all. I guess I will just have to take the good with the bad but I’m super sensitive at the moment so sometimes it’s hard.

It’s a liberty taken by Libers mostly femals to call God [who is Spirt] W/O gender a women:eek: It is biased and antibiblical as Christ Himself often refers to God as “My Father”:o

Pope John Paul I made a statement that could be paraphrased as “God is Father, and even more, He is Mother” (1978)

I think that also Pope John Paul II talked about “God the Mother” (Crossing the Threshold of Hope???)

I think that also Pope Benedict XVI used a similar imagery. (The God of Jesus Christ: meditations on the Triune God)
