My wife and I have godparents picked out for our next baby (due soon), and both are unwed. If only the godmother will be able to be present, will we need a proxy for the godfather ? And what is involved in that?

You will get a much more authoritative answer if you simply ask your priest. 🙂

We had a proxy for my son’s godfather as he was unable to attend due to distance. A Catholic friend stood in, all arranged through our parish.

Yep. Any person can stand proxy for a Baptismal or a Confirmation Sponsor.

In fact, there can be a proxy for marriage (at least under the old Canons).

Still is for marriage
Can. 1104 §1. To contract a marriage validly the contracting parties must be present together, either in person or by proxy.
In the former cathedral parish 600 km away from us they insist that the proxy for a godparent be appointed by the person he/she will be representing. It makes sense that the person you would be representing would have asked you to do so. We don’t have such a requirement in our parish.

We talked to our Priest today and got our answer. So, if you have two Godparents, and at least one of them will be present, you don’t need a proxy for the other (if he/she will not be able to attend the Baptism). You only need a proxy if both will be absent, or if you only have one and he/she can’t be there.
