Godparents-Confirmation

I was wondering the difference between our Godparents at our baptism and our Sponser? at Confirmation.

In the East i know the baptism and confirmation is done at the same time during baptism and that whoever stands by becomes the sponser or Godparent,but as a Catholic maybe im asking what is the role of our Confirmation sponser?

There is no difference in the role and that’s why the Church recommends using the same sponsor (godparent) for Baptism and Confirmation.

They can be the same, but they are not required to be the same. My 2 oldest chose a different person for their confirmation sponsor. My youngest chose the same person.

Much of it had to do with location. My 2 oldest sons’ baptismal Godparents were not available for the meetings that were required for the Sponsor/Confirmation Candidate part (meetings were once a month for both parties) due to location, but my youngest son’s was. No big deal.

My Godmother for baptism was still living in the area locally so I asked her to be my Confirmation sponsor, and she accepted that role. She did attend a required preparation class with me and my mother too. My sister chose a Catholic friend’s mother for her Confirmation sponsor as I am unsure as to why she didn’t choose her own Godmother living locally for Confirmation but at least our mother gave us a choice on those things. Both of us were 16/17 at the time, and were allowed freedom to choose our sponsors.

I was confirmed some 65 years ago in a very small church. The bishop came around every 5 years and confirmed every one in the 10-15 year old range. There were about a dozen of us. The pastor assigned one woman as sponsor for all the girls and one man for all the boys. It was my good fortune that he chose my grandfather for the boys.

Since the other altar boy and I were both being confirmed we got to serve our first mass for a bishop [the only mass I ever served for a bishop, and the first time I had ever seen a bishop.] With the bishop, the pastor and 4 or 5 other priests and the two altar boys in a very small altar area there was always someone next to us to push us through the motions.
