When my daughter was baptised 2 years ago, we asked my sister to be the Godmother. My husband and I were not as knowledgeable about our faith as we are now. Having said that, we might have chosen someone else. We knew my sister was falling or had fallen away from her Catholic faith. However, due to some urging from other family members we asked her to be a Godparent. The question is this: What do we do now? I know I cannot take that role away from her. I continue to pray for her conversion. My daughter’s Godfather is a Catholic, but we do not know how strong he is in his faith. Any advice here?

Well I don’t know what to tell you. If your choice of Godparents peters out. The next best thing would be to get involved in the parish, Youth ministry, CCD, have your children help you in your different ministries. So that they are exposed to other adults who do practice the Catholic Faith.

Can’t undo what’s done… my suggestion is to continue praying for your sister… but, your child can and should be influenced by her parents and anyother family member of good (the best they can be) standing and ask them to have an active role in the child’s spiritual upbringing… anyone who cares and want’s to help can be Godparent by proxy… remember when you met someone who said or introduced you to their uncle joe, and then later you were informed that he wasn’t really their uncle by blood, it’s just that he had been there for them for as long as they can remember… well, there’s no reason that this child of God can’t have a Godparent but just not by blood so to speak, (not the one’s appointed at baptism)

Love her with all your will, guard over her all your life, share that responsibility with every practicing catholic that you can… she will see the riches of your love and God’s church, and us in this forum will hold her in our hearts… 👍
