God teaches us forgiveness, even forgiveness of those who do not ask for forgiveness, seems our forgiveness should be unconditional where possible, yet we are not divine beings…
When Jesus spent his time on Earth, he could do nothing greater than love all his neighbours as he loves himself. But how did Jesus love the neighbours who condemned him to death and nailed him to the cross? We know Jesus prayed forgive them Father, and there is no mention of any of them asking for forgiveness first.

The last words of Jesus are applied to the sacraments - which are the cause of grace and forgiveness of sin. But yet he is not bound to the sacraments. The sacraments give the sole remedy. They are the mercy in which the Lord extends to us.
