I have two questions that have been running in my mind. (Hence the two topic title)
  1. What kind of omnipotence does God have? Is he able to do all things that can logically occur? Or is he able to do anything without restriction?
I am tempted to believe the second but then problems like “Can God create another God” or “Can God make Himself no longer exist” arise.
  1. If the Church teaches that marijuana use is morally wrong because it impairs one’s ability to reason, wouldn’t alcohol, cigarette, and cigar use also be wrong because it immediately has an effect on a person?
I am not a smoker nor do I want to understand God’s nature wrong. I just want to know.

What God has the power to do, and what God does, is what you are talking about. Therefore within your own life what do you really have the power to do, and what is it that you do, and that can help you begin to understand.

As far as alcohol or anything of that nature there is a proper place and time for all things under the sun. If you respect the law of the land, then you act accordingly. If you don’t, then most likely you will suffer an undesirable consequence for that, usually at the hand of law enforcement. The law of the land and law enforcement and the courts thereof, don’t care what you think things ought to be.

Your question #1 came to you while enjoying some things in Question #2, didn’t it? 😃
  1. God cannot go against his nature… that is impossible.
  2. Any use of anything not in moderation and for the purpose of escape is sinful.

  1. But with God are not all things possible?
  2. Are not those who drink and smoke cigarettes/cigars doing the exact same thing; smoking/drinking to escape? You may reply that they do it just to have a good time in a social situation and in moderation. Wouldn’t a marijuana user be able to say the same thing?

All things ARE possible for us through God. God cannot hate for example…it is against His nature. He cannot create another ‘God’ either…that ‘God’ wouldn’t be God if he was created…get it?

The weed question gets asked pretty often, and the discussions are rather tedious. I’m very aware of the effects of pot smoking, and it is just a cop-out to suggest that it can be done in moderation. You know it can’t. There is only one purpose for smoking it “except for the ‘medical’ uses” of course. Smoking cigarettes is probably sinful as well, due to the harm inflicted. There is no way we can say moderate alcohol use is sinful.

  1. For God to go against God’s nature is not a thing, any more than there is a thing that is both a circle and not a circle. There isn’t as much difference between who God is and what God does as there is for us.
  2. Using drugs can be wrong for a couple reasons. (There are others relating to the effects it may have on us and others, but these are some main ones):
  • Loss of self control, impaired reason. Moderate use of tobacco and alcohol does not do this. Getting stoned does.
  • Bad motivations etc. May or may not be present in any use of alcohol or tobacco. Individual case thing.
  • Because it’s illegal. It is wrong to disobey a just law. This is not a barrier to the use of alcohol or tobacco, but is for Marijuana and the like

Thank you for answering the pot question. It makes more sense now.

I’m still a little confused as to God’s nature. If God cannot do everything, logical or not, what made His nature so that He could not do certain things like hate? Put another way, doesn’t His inability to do certain things mean He is bound by logic? Or is He Logic Itself just as He is Being Itself?

Yup. He “is”. Pretty simple.

I try not to dwell on it too much.

God cannot contradict His own nature.

The inability to perform “illogical acts” is not a limitation of power, because there is no such act, even in theory, as an “illogical act.” What would it mean for God to make a “square circle,” for example? When we say he “cannot,” we do not mean he lacks the power, but that the phrase “square circle” is meaningless. So too, Truth itself lying, etc.
