I’m a sophomore in high school and I have never felt like i was outstandingly good at anything. I am in honors classes, but I am mediocre compared to my peers. I am also a dancer, but I am average. I have tried a lot of things. I feel as if I have no special talent, but I am slightly strong in many aspects. I feel it is a lot easier to be very good at one thing and to not be good at other things than to be mediocre in many things. I am so lucky to be gifted with a variety of gifts, but it is very difficult to identify which I should pursue. School takes a lot of time, and I do not get to dance. If i should choose to lower the intensity of my school schedule, I could dance more and vice versa. But I am afraid that i will make the wrong choice and a lot of time and money will be wasted. Also, what if you do have a gift, but others say you are too smart to do the thing that pertains to it? I am so torn. i have been praying about it for years, and I still have come to no conclusion. Is there anything else I can do to discover what God wants me to do? Is there a novena or something? Am i missing a big part of being receptive to God? What suggestions do you guys have for me/do you know what i am going through? Thank you so much. God bless you.

PS: Maybe God is teaching me patience, but I REALLY WANT TO KNOW lol

What matters is that you devote your life to serving God.

Don’t get so caught up on the idea of there being something specific you have to do. Don’t think that if you pick the “wrong” thing or don’t make the “perfect” choice you will suffer for it for the rest of your life.

You’ll only drive yourself crazy with that mentality.

There are many many different ways to serve God in life. So don’t worry about making the perfect choice, many of the options available to you will work out great.

You sound like you have a great future ahead, so focus on enjoying High School 😃

Thank you. It is hard to see the big picture for me especially now. 🙂

I didn’t become a Christian till I was 28. But when I did, this business of “knowing God’s will” (by which we mean what does God want us to do) raised it’s head in short order.

I remember talking to one of the pastor’s sons about it, and he replied, “You might have to wait a long time. Moses was 80 before he found out what God wanted him to do”.

That reply was pretty discouraging, as I was about 30 at the time, and had no intention of waiting 50 years for a voice to start talking out of a burning pot plant in the church foyer, giving me divine guidance. “Hoi, Crowley, I’m talking to you! I’ve got a job for you to do! Er, go down the hall and get the fire extinguisher will you? I think I’ve overdone it!”

But it’s true though - we can wait a long time before what might be called God’s (specific) plan becomes obvious. And naturally we’re impatient.

If I were you, I’d just continue going through the motions at the moment - attend Mass, go to school, do your homework, dance when you can, learn more about the church and your religion.

I don’t think I’d put too much stock in dancing as a career. If you enjoy it, fine, continue doing it. But nearly all the professional dancers I’ve seen appear to be young people. What happens when they get to forty?

So you need another skill set that is more useful for earning a crust in the long term.

If God wants you to do something specific, He’ll let you know, either in some quite sudden fashion, or with a sort of continuous gentle pressure. But you will know it.

I can assure you though it will be on His terms, and that will include the time frame.

Yes, patience is definitely a part of it, and you have the double disadvantage of living in an impatient, instant society.

I was in gymnastics for years, never became professional or anything but did it just for the love of it. Are you questioning whether you can do this professionally?

Incidentally, I don’t view those classes as a waste. I appreciate experiencing them, and I believe I am a richer person for them. They just turned out, in my case, not to be my “calling”, so to speak.

If you have been praying about this for years, you must really want this. I guess you could cut back your course load if need be.

Oh, something ironic. I have come from a family with a lot of valedictorians. My father was a valedictorian. I have, I think, 2 sisters who were. One of them was into music, sports, AND managed to excell at her studies. It’s curious how when we are doing all these activities, especially ones we love, how we can seem to “rise to the occasion”.

My parents didn’t used to allow my brothers and sisters to participate in music, mistakenly thinking it would all interfere with their studies. One of my brothers finally was allowed to take up a musical instrument, and he is a doctor, got 4 awards when he graduated, was also into sports!

So no, I don’t see where being into these things will hurt your studies. I mean, I didn’t see it in my family. It almost seemed like it taught us all how to better organize our time, and it also taught us a bunch of other things that will be helpful later in life.

Good luck!

I’ll close with prayer.

Hail Mary, Full of Grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blest is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. :angel1:

Oh, one of my sisters who was a valedictorian was into sports, band, choir. When she was 16 y.o., she toured Europe with America’s Youth in Concert, was an alternate for the McDonald’s band, participated in bunches of activities. So, you’d actually be surprised what you can do!

She played at Notre Dame, Carnegie Hall!

You are like other me, lol.

I understand my life through the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30), and there is where I think you should take your lesson.

One man received from his lord five talents, another two talents and the third one talent.

I am the man who received one talent. And sometimes I asked myself what was the point. Everyone else was smarter, funnier, better than me in everything. And I was even bullied by people some people in my family telling me I would be a tramp when grown-up and that would never finish high-school.

However, the lesson I took from that parable, is that the lord, or God speaking in our faith context, will not demand from me talents that he has not given me. Sure, some people got five, and they will answer for their five. My mission on earth is to at least keep my single talent, whatever it is.

So, even with this extreme slowness, I am moving at my speed. Things that are easier to others are harder to me, but I never gave up. The ones that proclaimed I would never do high-school are now surprised that I am enrolled in my Masters (well, it is being an epic battle but here I am:D).

My advice to you, is first re-read that Parable of the talents, it always remind me of how I can always do something with the little I have. Read also about the life of saints. I am finding that many of them had failed at something, struggled in school, business, marriage only to do magnificent things later in life like building convents or convert whole communities.

Cheers

Thanks to everyone who replied to me. Your responses reassured me. God bless you all:)

It’s a pretty competitive world. Sometimes I suffer this problem too. It’s hard not to compare ourselves to others sometimes. Whenever I think about not being successful at one particular thing I remember the quote by Bl.Mother Teresa. “God does not require that we be successful only that we be faithful.”

I have found that if you want to do the Lords will seek to be holy and righteous as him. Rom 3:11 there is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks God.

I have found sense I listened to this vs and really started to pray and seek to understand how to not be Rom 3:10As it is written:

“There is no one righteous, not even one;

I have found nothing but torture and torture and torture. BUT I feel so very close to God, and like one day God will use me to unite the churches under one roof. It is weird, I have so much hate and demons and I have seen visions(or 2 sec dreams) of Muslims lots of Muslims coming to the Lord. BUT All I have found is just seeking his face, to understand, and have not understood. I believe I have found wisdom to why there is no marriage in heaven and the mystery of the cross. BUT again do not have a wife and I still do not understand, just full of wisdom and no understanding…really sucks.

One thing is for sure NEVER ASK FOR WISDOM, and NOT ALSO FOR UNDERSTANDING as it is COMPLETE MISERY. For all you want is to understand. I sought for both…praise the Lord he made me wise…grumble grumble grumble, but he will I pray and pray and pray he will teach me to understand.
