God's will and life's decisions

Hi, folks have asked similar questions but I’m still confused. How scripted is our life and how is God directing our lives.

I’ve read in places where God always had and has a plan for each of us. As we ponder decisionss around vocations, careers, school decisions involving our kids, how do I know I’m doing what God wants.

In a few years I’ll be able to retire and perhaps do some thingss I always wanted to do. Some members of my family want me to go one way while I’m inclined to go another.

There is no burning bush in my back yard. How do I know what Gods will is versus my own?
 
I think after praying on it, you will know what the right decision is by asking yourself these questions…Does my decision bring me closer to God and what is truely good and holy in my life? How will it affect me, my family , my future here and beyond?
