Good evening everyone and happy Friday!

As the title states, I am wondering how everyone determines whether a decision they’ve made is God’s will or their own will?..let me give you an example: my bf and I of almost 4 years, have recently take a break from each other…I have a few threads about our relationship for anyone interested in reading them, but suffice it to say, things have not been the same for us since my crash and mother’s death (both last August/16) and as such, I suggested a break so I discern once and for all what my future plans are…we haven’t seen each other (except for a brief 10 minute encounter after work last Friday) for over a month and some days I miss him (or at least our talking and texting) and other days, I am totally fine without him in my life…we did communicate via email, call and text up until this past Tuesday, so it’s been about 4 days now without any sort of communication…some days I wake up totally fine with my decision to leave him and move on, others I wonder what if this is a huge mistake and I will be miserable without him…I started a novena to St. Anne but some times forget to say my daily prayer…I pray the rosary pretty much every night as well…

So I guess I am wondering how do you know if you are following God’s will or your own will?..how do I know which feeling is the right one?..what kind of signs do people get or what can I “look” for?..

I go to mass every Sunday and I try to go to adoration on Saturday…I can’t do daily mass because of work…I went to confession last Saturday as well and try to do so every few months…

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I think that you need to ask yourself why are you doubting your decision that is causing you to question whose will it is, yours or God’s.

At those times when you wonder if you did the right thing, is it because you miss your boyfriend, or you are afraid of not finding the right person down the road? If that is the case, you would be just settling if you got back together. I don’t believe God’s will is for you to settle. So maybe think about why you ended it, why you are questioning your decision, and what you really want in a relationship.

I skimmed through your other threads. If the finance issues haven’t improved for both of you, why would you consider your decision a mistake or think it’s not Gods will that you break it off? I am not sure why you would think this is a good relationship in lieu of the problems with pre-marital sex and his inability to take care of himself financially.

I think you should continue with your spiritual life as you are doing because that is always a step in the right direction. May God bless you and guide you.

Hello,

Agreed - determining God’s will is sometimes difficult, but is sometimes a matter of trust.

Also, think about whether or not we should determine God’s will based on feelings.

Perhaps God’s hand is in your current situation.

Perhaps one barometer is - how did the relationship bring us closer to God?

Two books I own but have yet to read are:

Finding God’s Will for You - Saint Francis de Sales

The Life God Wants You to Have - Gregory Popcak PhD

sorry, don’t think I’ve seen your other threads but yes, think of the reasons you ended the relationship and how valid those reasons were.

I read your post because of the title - which is something that I struggle with as well. And I am really trying to figure this out in my life.

I too am divorced with an annulment but just a hair bit older. I skimmed your previous posts and I think inside you know what the right thing to do is, but I understand it is a hard decision.

I have no answers or pretty words - as I have yet been able to find a special someone to have a relationship with since my divorce. I do know that I would not settle just to keep from being alone. (millions of people do that exact thing tho) Not just because of myself, but if I settle then I am not doing the other person any favors either. They need to try harder as well, be better and give more. I truly believe the best thing I could have done for my ex was to put my foot down while we dating and engaged. Hold him to the standard that I hold myself to… but he would’ve left me if I did that… so then went my story 🙂

I would echo one of the points that mattp0625 brought up - does the relationship bring you closer to God?

Good luck and if you find any way to confirm what God wants you to do please let me know the trick 🙂
