Hi - I believe God is asking me to call my parent and offer forgiveness. I haven’t had a relationship with this person since my childhood, over 30 years. I’ve been praying for months asking for guidance and I keep getting the same message. God wants me to call to offer forgiveness. Knowing this is what Gods wants I feel that I must do it. My question is is it right to tell someone you forgive them when you don’t feel like you have? Also what happens if I know this is what God wants and I don’t do it or I wait months or years? Will I be in a state of mortal sin if I know this is what God wants and I ignore him?

Forgiveness comes from the heart. It is a healing act which requires your consent. You may say you forgive her, but it will be empty if in your heart you still haven’t. Pray that the Lord gives you strength to forgive her. I suggest you talk to a priest about this issue, maybe at your next confession.

Seek spiritual direction with your pastor or a spiritual director. Sometimes we fool ourselves about “what God wants”. those trained in spirtual direction can help you in discernment.

also, perhaps you need counseling regarding whatever it is that happened that needs forgiveness. you can also share with someone in counseling all of the circumstances and whether or not it is a good idea to be back in contact with this parent.

Forgiveness is a process. It’s often not an instantaneous one. especially where major hurts are built up over years within families.

Sometimes it can begin with the conscious act to make a promise “I forgive you”, Or: “I want to forgive you, therefore I Forgive You!”

To not forgive a person is a sin. it gets between you and God it puts your immortal soul in grave danger. If you die holding onto and refusing to let go of the sins of others then how can you possibly accept Gods forgiveness for all of your multitude of sins, and accept his forgiveness. How can you enter into his Purgatory, knowing it is a process of stripping from you the lack of forgiveness to which you so desperately cling.

Before you pick up the phone, however, you must ask yourself: How will I broach the subject?

“Hi Mum/Dad. You know how your behaviour left me damaged and caused every problem I’ve ever had in my life? well even though you were such a pathetic excuse for a parent who sinned so bad, out of the kindness of my heart, and becasue God told me to, Im going to forgive you… I still wish I could pay you back somehow…”
(Obviously a gross exaggeration of the sentiments contained therein.)

or:
“Hi Mum/Dad. I know I’ve kept away from you. I was wrong. I’ve let myself become bitter and hurt about things in the past. But I want you to know that I really want to put all that behind me. You’re my Mum/Dad. I want to say I’m sorry for not being a good Son/Daughter, and I really want to let go of the hurt I feel about those things in the past. I realise that no parent can possibly be perfect, and you did your best. Some of it still hurts. But I really want to let go and forgive.”

Or something to that effect… Personally I’m very poor at tact. an even more sensitively thought out version may be better.

Another question is this: DOes the parent know how you feel? If they do and are sorry it’s easier to offer your forgivenss. If they are unaware or in denial then it’s more difficult and a greater need exists for a more tactful approach.

Remember this however: The Conscience is a guide from God for what is Right and Wrong for you.
Private Revelation is not binding on the church, but if you have good reason to believe it is authentic, after you have “Discerned the Spirit” and truly believe that you know Gods will, then you are bound by that revelation, and must follow it’s requirements.

In this case the revelation is telling you to do something fully in accordance with the Gospel and with what we know about Gods Plan. He wants you to start a process of reconciliation within your family.

I would say that you should consider this to be an essential, and God given command. The question for you is not “IF?” but “When? and How?”

I would, however, strongly agree with those who recommend seeking spiritual direction from your priest before you act.

I would talk to a priest or i would say Our Father for your intention I know forgiveness is hard to do and spend some with the Lord in front of the tabernacle. the Lord is always there for you God bless you

I felt called by God to tell a young engaged couple leaving on a trip to “Drive safe” I argued with God cause It embarassed me to say it. then His mom said, “Be careful, drive safe.” so I felt I was off the hook! But really should’ve fessed up that, “I feel led by God to tell you to be extra careful, and drive safely.” But I didn’t want to experience “the Look” where people stare at me like I’m crazy, so I choked it back. The couple missed a turn. They flipped a U turn, and were broadsided by a semi truck. His fiance lived, but was in a comma for many months. She woke up with amnesia. She never did remember him again. Eventually he stopped visiting, and trying to make it work.

I think the lesson here is that God wanted to save them from this tragedy, but I was an unwilling servant. I think many times God trys to answer our prayers, but people are unwilling to do their part, and so it appears that nothing happens. If is a great act of Grace when God communicates His desires to you!

God is calling you to forgive your parent. We are supposed to forgive. It’s healthy! In the Spiritual realm as a parent she owes you a debt for her sin. Ask God to help you forgive her this debt. This means you don’t want God to punish her for what she owes you, or did to you, or failed to do for you. You wish to let it go, and forgive this debt, even though she may not deserve it! It is your personal response to the Love Of God, when you want to forgive, and live in peace with all people. That is God’s grace active in your life. forgiving is healing for you! It is helpful for all those around you. Forgiving is a decision, not an emotion. Forgiving is an action, not a feeling. Of course it is much easier when both our feelings, and actions match up. In my experience, the act of choosing to forgive later brings the grace and blessing of feeling that I do emotionally, truely forgive!

I’m not sure if you are to contact your parent to voice this forgiveness. This is where a Spiritual Director, whom you can share all the details with, will be very helpful. Sometimes it is necessary to forgive, yet not have contact with a person who will continue to cause us harm. Other times it’s helpful to have limited contact for the purpose of sharing that forgiveness only. Other times, forgivness may open the door for a relationship that is elevated, healed, and at some levels restored. This is very rare because it requires all parties involved to follow God’s leading.

May God bless you on your journey. Be safe my friend.

So you’re also getting those calls. Same with me. You should offer forgiveness, because the moment you offer it you might all of a sudden sincerely feel forgiveness in your heart, because G0d will continue to help you. He doesn’t start things and then leaves you hanging in there. It could also be that much more happens during or after this call. First you should make the decision and then He will guide you further. This has been my experience at least.

Thank you everyone for your guidance. I was hoping not to bother my priest with this as I know he is so busy. I truly hate to to impose on his time with an issue I was praying I could reach on my own. Upon reading your replies I could see that my hesitation with calling my parent is a mix of pride and fear. The pride I can get past but the fear of him wanting a relationship and me not being ready for that is difficult. I know he is a changed person and I believe he regrets his actions but I spent my entire life building a wall to keep myself safe. I haven’t even thought about it for more years then I can count and then suddenly while praying one night it came to me that I needed to forgive him to become closer to God. I have this sense that I am supposed to let him know he is forgiven. I guess I will be making a call to my local parish priest for some guidance 🙂

Yes and please let us know how it all worked out and what happened.
In the meantime, I will keep being subscribed to this thread 🙂

satan caused the rift Janet, not His/Jesus’ Children (being your relative) at the time. Therefore, look at how satan worked on the insecurity/the weakness in your relative at the time, acknowledge it was satan (and not your relative’s fault), pray to open up your heart firstly by remembering some of the good things your relative has done before satan tempted him/her, pray that your relative’s soul is genuinely remorseful, (regardless of whether your relative apologises or not), then keep the call short when making your apology. If the hurt is still present and too raw, stay away from this relative after making the apology in order to ensure that more hurt is not opened up by satan in future.

Love your Sister in Christ
